Hello from Minneapolis, MN. Just stumbled on this great forum a week ago and decided to join. I'm refurbishing my old Weber Genesis 2000 and might have a new addiction. I'm not the handiest guy but this forum's been a great resource already. I like to run, bike, spend time with family, and eat grilled meat.

Hi Peter

WELCOME!!!!!!!

Tell us a little bit more about your family. Married ? Kids? Pets?

Thanks all! Two daughters, a wife and a little black dog named Ruby. My oldest daughter just started her XC season which I’m really looking forward to. My youngest is a budding cellist. Overall life is busy but good. We are in the process of moving and can’t wait to be in our new place!

Welcome to the forum.

You really don't have to be that handy to work on Weber grills. Start with baby steps and build from there.

I also bike - did over 5,000 miles last year just commuting 16 miles each way to work every day. My kids (10, 7, 5) also bike. My five year old will do 5 miles each way to a playground in light traffic with us. They also ride the pump track by us.

I do all the maintenance on the bikes except keeping the wheels true. Commuting to work, I simply wore out tons of tires and grips and a seat and cables and derailleurs and a chain or two. We all ride curb find style bikes. The one Trek 20" kid bike is a darn good bike and now has three coats of different colored spray paint on it. Just grabbed an identical Trek bike in pink/purple and ended up fixing it up and giving it away.

Thanks Scott. That’s some impressive mileage! And wow, good for your kids! 10 miles for a 5 year old is amazing. I’m just now getting into biking, having messed up my foot from all the running. Just now reading up on all the parts, gear etc. but aiming to keep it simple. I’m in the market for a decent road bike. In a few months though I’ll switch focus to skate skiing.

I like your thoughts about baby steps. I think that applies to grills and bikes!

OK - here's a story for you. We did a 25 mile Lehigh Valley rail trail in PA when the kids were young. Gravel, no traffic or stop signs, and about one percent downhill grade.

My son was seven and did the whole 25 miles like a champ. My daughter bailed after pedaling the first 15 miles, but she was four. My youngest rode on my back in a carrier and also bailed after 15 miles.

Scott--you guys have some fantastic endurance genes in your fam!
Anthony--thanks! I haven't done RAGBRAI but looks right up my alley. Have you done it?

No, I've never ridden it. It did come through Kalona a few years ago and we were camping along the final day's route this year. Quite a sight to see all those bikes stretching for miles along a highway.

Hi Peter! I'm also new and glad to meet you. This forum already been so helpful and with great folk. Sounds like a great set of hobbies 😎
Also like to cycle, it's a great thing to get into and if you get a road bike you won't look back.
Can't wait to see what you cook up!

Welcome to the family Peter !
While on the subject of bikes, my wife has done 50 milers and Century rides.
Mostly does Triathlons, usually Sprint. Just completed one back on July 30th in San Diego area. Came in 2nd in her age group.
Not bad for someone approaching 70. Since Tri's are bike, run and swim, she trains running single track trails mainly in the mountains behind our home and swims almost daily. Swam 432 miles last year and 580 miles the year before.
