Second cook on the kettle

Cant find a tri tip, so I did my second cook on the OTS with a top round/london broil. First cook didnt come out so good, this one was a little better but I still dont think I am using enough coals

Everything I made (except for dessert) came from this site

First were the potatoes. Heated a CI and put some butter on it, then took some halved potatoes, peppered them and salted the skin. Threw them on the skillet and let them cook a while, then put the meat on

.

Also threw some bacon wrapped asparagus with it and some ciabatta bread.

It came out alright but it took a long time for everything and I think I need to work on my grilling. Meat was a little underdone for me, even though I thought I had it to 125

At least it looks pretty

and although this has nothing to do with BBQ, I have a sweet tooth, so had some ice cream to top it off.

Hey Rick,

Can I ask how many coals you are using? What temps did your grill get to with that load. I'm still learning my new 22.5 OTG and noticed that it takes a lot of coals to get what I feel is hot.

Looks like a great meal Rick!! Try not using the rails and bank the same amount of coals on one side of the grill!

Not enough apparently, I used 32 per basket (yes, I counted) and it got up to around 430, but that was when I put the potatoes on and by the time the LB went on it had lost heat.

Thanks, I am going to try that next time. What do you do with the vent on the bottom of the kettle?

Looks good to me too!!

You can adjust the one on the bottom. WIDE OPEN...and you should be running pretty hot. The more you close....the more the coals are starved for O2...results...cooler temps. NOTE....Never adjust your top vent, you should always leave it all the way open...IMHO:)

Grill on Master!!

I have the 22.5" OTS also. When I grill I don't split the coals. I use indirect placing coals on one side only, leaving the bottom vent wide open and controlling heat with the top vent. I typically will sear the meat first then move it to the cooler side to finish. You cook still looks good though, I like rare personally.
