Farewell to a great lady

While I tend to be very private, I have to come on here and pay respects and honor an aunt and Godmother of mine that passed away last night. She had been stricken with kidney disease at a very young age, and had struggled with it her whole life, going through countless surgeries and procedures. In her 40's one of her kidneys was not functioning and had to be removed. Soon after, her only remaining kidney began to falter, and she was in imminent danger without a transplant. My mother, her younger sister, donated one of her own to save her life and give her more time with us. Little did we know, the transplant that was supposed to last 10 years, would last over 40 years. The doctors said that their match was perfect, better than that of identical twins, but none predicted that it would last as long as it did. She had many additional medical problems through the years, including a recent heart attack with several blockages that they could not clear because of potential damage to her only kidney. Each Christmas we thought it would be her last, but she continued to fight on, and I would constantly tell her that she was going to outlive us all. She lived a happy and healthy-as-possible life for many years , but she began to fail and develop dementia several years ago and the miraculous kidney began to show signs of wearing down. The last two years she could no longer be cared for in her home and was moved to a nursing home, Unfortunately the dementia quickly took what little awareness she had left, and she was not aware of anyone or anything of her surroundings. Recently, she developed more complications, and the difficult (or not) decision was made to remove her from dialysis, basically her life support system at this point. She held on another week, and quietly went in her sleep last night. She had just turned 82 a couple of weeks ago.
She was a true inspiration. A wonderful person who never knew a stranger, and would give you anything that you needed. Her positive attitude and her unwavering faith in God kept her going, and I have no doubt that she is now with Jesus and others that have passed on. I am blessed and thankful that she was a part of my life, and I am glad that she is finally in peace.

Condolences on your loss. She sounds like a wonderful influence in your life, and one that will continue on, I'm sure.

I am so sorry for your loss. That is a wonderful story of sisterly love, and it allowed you to experience
more time with someone who was obviously a great influence on you. This is a beautiful tribute to her.
Wishing comfort for you and your family, until you can all be together again.

So sorry for your loss. She had a good run and fought the good fight. May she forever be an inspiration.

Thank you all for the kind words and condolences. While certainly a loss for us, we are also looking at it optimistically as a celebration of her life and all that she endured. She is truly an inspiration for all that she went through and still keeping her positive attitude and good spirits. Thank you again.

Charlie, my condolences. What a great story of survival, unselfish sacrifice, and perseverance. It's a good reminder to me for valuing each and every day we live and the people we care for. Let me (us) know if you need anything.
