ET-732 reliability?

Thinking about getting a digital thermometer to go with my new WSM and it sound like there were a lot of recommendations for the Maverick ET732.

Looking at these on Amazon, everyone either gives 5 stars or 1 with the one stars all related to temp probe issues. Are the probes really fragile? More so than the 73s?

I've had an ET-732 for a few months now. Not a problem. I do try to take care of it.

I run my wires through a probe grommet, I do not run them under the lid.

Absolutely -- protect those probes. I don't think they are fragile at all -- certainly no more than any other probes. But rather than put them to stress or abuse, I would just as soon take a little care and not have to replace an expensive item.

Have you ever noticed that when a product is rated well on Amazon, MOST (I'm not saying all) '1' ratings are by absolute idiots. Either they are rating the shipping, or Amazon's service, or they didn't pay attention and bought something the didn't want. If the item has quite a few ratings and the overall is in the 4-5 range, I usually only read the '1's and '2's to see just what the "problem" was. I mostly only read the good ratings if I want more information about the product that may not be obvious from the description.

I tally up the Amazon 3 through 5 star reviews and the 1 and 2 stars. If I like the ratio I figure it's a good gamble. I replaced my ET-73 with the ET-732 because my receiver started having problems. I follow the instructions religiously on the probes. Do not immerse in water.

I really like my ET-732 and the receiver actually works inside my house and the 73 didn't.

They aren't any more fragile than what you would expect. If you take care of them you should be fine. I had an incident once while doing a tri-tip. I took it off my top grate on my wsm to put it directly over the coals for a direct sear. The only problem - I had forgotten to remove the food probe from the meat. Needless to say, the direct heat and subsequent flame flare-up was too much and my probe was done. If you avoid knucklehead tactics such as mine you'll be okay. Also try to keep them away from moisture. If moisture gets into the area where the probe and the lead come together, you could have some issues.

If you have problems with your probes just contact Maverick and they should replace them no questions asked. All they ask is to send the faulty one in as part of the exchange.

Thanks for the tip, Stefan. Bad for good -- what a concept!

The ET-732 is a serious good bang for your buck. Above all else, protect the probes (be gentle) and don't submerge in water.

Its a pretty common thing for folks to submerge the entire probe in the sink filled with water to clean them off after cooking. If the probe is a bit warmer than the water, it will actually tend to "draw" water into the probe tip where the braided lead and solid tip connects. This mis-use is not really the fault of the manfacturer, but that of the user.

Also, I don't like the stress that running (crimping) the probe lead under that lid causes. Grommets are very simple to install and make for a longer life of the probe.

I don't think the probe is a weak link in the ET-73 or 732, rather it may be harsh use by the owner.
