Electric Food Slicer

A recent thread on buckboard bacon contained a post by Rich Emkey suggesting the purchase of a food slicer. I can really see the utility of one (I had one many years ago but now it is gone). Any recommendations? Are the ones under $100 any good or do you really have to spend a ton? Many thanks.

Don, a personal opinion is that the expensive ones probably are a waste of money. I owned a cheap plastic model for 15 years and it served me well for the limited amount of slicing I did (occasional lunch meat bargins, cuccumbers for pickles, bread, etc). After it died my wife surprised me with a fairly nice one, well it was hard to clean, and awkward to use. I eventually went back and bought a Waring Pro ( I think it was a little under $100). It's OK and it serves its purpose, I'm sure there are nicer ones, but for bacon 3 or 4 times a year it does fine.

Don, if you buy an inexpensive one make sure it'll handle the largest cut of meat you plan to slice. I bought my first one (a Chinese cheapy that looks like a Waring knockoff) from Heartland America (mail/web retailer) last year and while it's good for some stuff there've been a couple of times when it wasn't large enough to cleanly cut a roast on one pass.

I went through this about a year ago. I ended up looking at a lot of slicers and decided on the Chef's Choice 610.

I have used for buckboard bacon, jerky, and sandwich meat and it has performed very well. It sells for just under $100. I think that's the "bang for the buck" price range. Don't expect industrial quality at that price, but it is not pure junk, either.

Thanks all for the tips. I ordered the Chef's Choice one yesterday....Linens & Things accepts the 20% off coupons from BBB and free shipping to boot - gotta love competition.
