electric brinkman question

I just picked up an electric brinkman smoker used for my brother-in-law as he wanted an easy way to get into BBQ with out using charcoal. My hope is he will progress to a WSM.
Any way the smoker says Brinkman Sportsman. It has one rack and water pan. No heat control on the element. Will it get hot enough to cook Pork butt and Brisket? Does anyone here have one?
Thanks for the help
Rick

Hi Rick,

I had a brinkman like you describe here, and it will cook brisket and butts, but only in nice weather. Anything under about 45 degrees and you can just forget it. I learned that the hard way. It will top out around 170 degrees in cold weather and that's it.

And the only reason I had one is because my old apartment wouldn't let you have charcoal grills. Needless to say, I eventually smuggled my WSM onto my deck the last few months I lived there. They never knew any different.
