Dave's Smokefire EX6 Experiences

For me, I prefer a front shelf. I can put a tray right up to the body of the grill which makes it easier to load and unload food. My SmokeFire is elevated due to the larger casters and I can still reach inside with no issues.

So many of you have been talking about how useful the front shelf is I couldn't resist. I found a Camp Chef shelf on sale and bit the bullet. It only took about an hour to install and that included drilling 4 holes in the body. I did my first cook with it yesterday and it is a great mod to my heavily modded 5 year old Camp Chef. Body by Camp Chef (no rust), Brains by Rec Tec (excellent smoke flavor), and economical. However, if I replace it it will be with an EX4 or RT590.

Agreed. I really liked the Camp Chef front shelf option and once I used it, I was in heaven. I think the last pellet smoker I had with a useful front shelf was a Yoder. My Lang 36 stick burner also had a front shelf. It's just handy to have and I find if used correctly, prevents a lot of mess.

Weber came through and the pellet slide was just dropped off from FedEx. I'll post pics tonight when I get home from work.

Tonight I worked on the shelf project a bit more. Cut the main shelf down to the size I wanted and started to work on the side shelf. I have a plan and we'll see how it turns out. I got the dados cut on the side shelf, though it is not cut to the finished length just yet. Width matches the front shelf at 12".

Ehhh? Far from finished, this is just a rough mockup of where I'm heading. Still have many cuts to make.

That’s a lot of table. 🤔 If you find it convenient then do it! I have a table in my BBQ area and it works fine.

After a day or two if not cooking on a pellet grill, I'm back for a late evening dinner. Marinated bone in chicken thighs and some teriyaki habanero chicken sausages. I had zero pellet feed issues and it ran like a top. I set the EX6 for 350 degrees and didn't change the temperature for the cook. I also didn't use any drip pans.

A tasty easy dinner. That sausage was a little hotter than I would prefer, so to prevent a 2 AM wakeup call, I limited myself to 4-5 bites. haha

So glad to hear that a lot of the problems are being solved and that Weber stepped up to get them taken care of. Best of all that the smokeFires are turning out to be great cookers.
David that chicken and sausage look great.

"Has anyone seen my EX6?"

I hope you accept this in the good humor for which is intended; that's some terrific work space you're creating!

Holy crap that looks beautiful. Almost looks better than the food you kicking out of that thing.... I said, almost... lol

Isn't that fun? I loved doing that stuff and you do very nice work. With that much weight on the front are you noticing any change in stability?

I didn't spend too much time on my shelf project tonight, but I decided to cut down the side shelf start rounding over the edges with a trim router. I have much more work to done before I start staining.

Looks great.I was liking that full shelf and was going to recommend rounding the corner so it didn't cause a cut on a little kids head lol.
