Cutting Butts for shorter cook time more bark

Anyone ever cut their butts in half say to get more bark and decrease cook time? I'm expecting to halve the cook time since there's still mass absorbing heat. But I'd guess you'd drop 25% or so off the cook time keeping it closer to 1-1.5hrs/# rather than 1.5-2/#. Any suggestions on What direction to split? I was thinking get the fat cap cut in half rather than split the fat cap from the rest of the shoulder. I was going to get the butcher to do it so I don't have to worry about working around the bone.

Yep, If I'm in a hurry, I high heat them. Just did 2 butts top grate and 2 picnics lower grate last month, for a grad party. Shoulders were done in 6 hrs and butts in 7 hrs. IIRC, they came out great, couldn't tell the difference. I foiled eveything at the 4 hr mark. cooked at 325º - 350º the whole time. HTH
