Was cleaning the garage and came across some chargriller CI grates I had stashed and forgotten about. Decided to repurpose them to fit my kettle. Here it goes...

Second piece cut to fit

Third piece on

Third piece cut, then the OCD kicked in. Used some of the trimmings to finish out the circle.

And for the grand finale...

I made it fully functional! :) still need to wrap up a few loose ends and probably going to make the other side of the grate open too. I never use that feature really, but what good modder doesn't go the extra mile? Lol. They're not craycort grates, but I saved $100! Going to season them along w my CI skillet to get them ready for carne asada Sunday!

Awesome job! that's something i had been thinking about too, but can't bring myself to take the old chargriller out of commission yet (even though she doesn't get used anymore) What did you use to cut the grates with? Keep us posted on how it turns out while cooking, I'm at least very interested. good job it looks 'grate'

I used a pneumatic, 3.5" cut off wheel. Laid out the pieces, marked the od with a soapstone and started cutting! Used some tie wire to secure for mock up. A 1/4"x20 bolt actually fits perfectly flush between the slots without pulling through! Might go get some stainless hardware and attach it better. Idk... Lol. I actually have some CI grates leftover if anyone is interested in making their own too! Let me know. Thanks
