**Will update with pics ASAP after I clean her up**

Hi Guys. New member here, although I have been lurking for a while.

Been using gas grills for years, wanted to give charcoal a try b.c I always loved the flavor. Did some research on this site and decided to go with the Performer. I lucked out and found one for sale on Craigslist about 10 minutes from my house.

Got the Performer, cover, rotisserie kit, 4 fuel tanks and 3 bags of Kingsford Blue for $200. A little more than I wanted to spend but the grill is in amazing condition except for a little rust on the handle welds. I know this is a common problem. Grill was very well maintained, there is very little carbon build-up.

So that leads to my question. Would I be able to get the lid replaced under warranty?. It said that lid is covered from rust for 10 years. The grill is a couple of years old. I do not think it was ever registered. Has anybody ever tried this? If possible, what is the best way to go about it?

Thanks in advance. I did some searching before I posted but could not find anything definitive.

Sounds like a good deal considering the accessories and fuel you got with it.

As far as the lid goes, first of all don't let it stress you out, something like that will probably never be even an issue. You could always take a wire brush to it and repaint it if you get bored one day.

Or, call Weber and be honest that you are the second owner and ask them what they think. They will most likely tell you that the warranty is applicable to the original owner but you never know.

Cook with it, enjoy it, and don't worry too much about that little bit of rust. JMHO!

the new one would rust to in that area. They always rust a little at the weld joints. Not a big deal at all and i would not worry about it. Keep it original!!

Thanks for your replies. I think I am just going to clean it up myself like you guys said. Outside of the handles the grill is in prestine shape. And I do want to keep it all original.

What is the best way to do it? I have a dremel. It is capable of doing small spaces like the handles with precision.

What paint should I use?

DJ,
Congrats on your CL score sounds like you got a great deal. I am looking forward to seeing the pictures of it.
When you get a chance could you up date your profile to show where you are grilling from.

Thanks Kevin

Just get a little tooth brush size wire brush from the hardware store and use a paint that is rated for either BBQ's, engines, or even headers.

If it's black, that's easy! If it's a color, just do your best to match and tape off around the undamaged area and you will have to know to look there to see the difference. Or, if it's a color even try calling Weber and tell them you are going to fix that little bit of rust and they may even have a touch up paint to send you. (I don't know though, that would be cool if so for sure)

DJ, welcome to the forums.
As said before, don't worry about the rust too much. If you do decide to replace the lid and it is not covered by warranty the good news is they are only about $40 in black. Colors run a bit more, something like $52 if I remember right.

Tim, thanks for the info. I plan on touching it up with a little bit of paint. It is not even that bad, but I just want to protect it from further rust. I believe the cause of the rust was from condensation building up underneath the Weber cover. I plan to keep it in the garage between uses so I will have no need for the cover.

I am sorry for not getting pics up yet. I have been very busy with work.

Thank you to everyone for all of your help.

Sorry for not getting pics up sooner. I have been busy. Did't get a chance to clean her up yet, but here is a pic. Can't wait to get use it. The vent is stamped with a "DE".

I really do not like the lid holder. Are there any modifications that could be done to get the lid to hang clear of the grates?

DJ nice grill,"DE" 2009 model, The lid corrsion is normal just use some cleaner wax, Mothers, Meguiars and that will come right off, then just wax the whole lid to stop it from happening. It looks like you are missing half of your lid holder assembly. But they are very low price from Weber,or Ace Hardware. You got a "Roti" with this purchace also. Nice.

It looks like the lid holder is underneath. That needs reinstalled on the bowl.
1/4 x 20 nuts and some aluminum washers. You will also need the plastic rollers. So, you may need to call weber for those. I suspect they melted and the seller removed it. Somebody somewhere posted info on the lid being a bit close to the bowl and hindering use, but I think that its individual preference. Most people don't have any issues.

Thanks guys. I have all the parts for it. I took apart the lid slide to see if I could do anything with it.

I think I might do away with it. It blocks a portion of the grill. I would like to hang it somewhere out of the way.

Just a thought. The original owner may have removed the lid holder on purpose as sometimes it interfered with the rotisserie.

No, I removed it myself and have all the parts for it.

I just care for it much. I think it obstructs access to the grates.

Thanks for the info. I will try that.

Yea the roti and the grates are in the background of the picture.

While the lid does block the grates some what, I like it better than hooking the lid on the bowl. BTW you can NOT do that with this lid as it is a Performer lid and has no hook.

If you are a lefty you may need to work from the other side of the grill like I do.

I see. I am just going to put it back together. It is not the worst thing in the world. Just need to get used to it.

Luckily, I am a righty!!

DJ,

When I first started using my performer the lid holder was a thing I was not use to but now I never even notice it being a problem till you are dealing something really big like a turkey.
Congrats again on a get find. Happy grilling.
