Clean-looking Silver


 
Pretty nice, especially the green hood. My own preference is for the 1000 series or the later Silver grills with the updated hoods and tables.
 
If I had seen that and had the space while in Cincy today, it would be in my driveway. Someone should jump on this.
 
No, that grill is stock. I rehabbed two exactly like that last year. Same hood color and all. If someone wants a decent grill, albeit dirty, that looks like a good deal. It looks like the grates and flavorizer bars are in useable shape and it is general good condition. It looks like some quick cleaning and you could be grilling Ribeyes a couple hours later. That is a great value for someone looking for working Weber at great price on an older Weber grill.
 
I trust your judgment on personal preference. Are these updates stock, or modifications? How would I know when I found one? Thanks!

Well, I don’t know about that; my wife would tell you how off my judgment can be:rolleyes:!

Of course it is all personal preference, but the last few years they made the Genesis Silver they featured a newer style hood and made the side tables a little larger. The tables apparently are slightly different material and have a little bit of a blue tone. Here is an unrestored 2005 Genesis Silver C with extended cart I picked up that has these features:

There is probably no real gain from this style change. I just like them better, or I would go all the way back to the 1000/2000/3000 series Genesis with the real wood slats. (One exception I guess is that these later Silvers also have a hood handle with a generous curve out that makes it less likely you will get burned knuckles:eek:.)

The early Genesis Silver grills are kind of a transition between the two. I guess I just like the original or the final version. The 2005 Silver grills have black knobs and handles which I think are sharp, but again just a preference.

I would say no, because I believe the one you showed on Craigslist has the same firebox as the one I just posted a picture of, just different hoods. That is not true about the earlier Genesis 1000 and Genesis I which had a different firebox with two rows of flavorizer bars. My understanding is that the rotisseries are not interchangeable between these and the Silver grills because the firebox is a different size.

Larry Michaels knows rotisserie super well, so I would go with what he says, but my hunch is that the deeper firebox original Genesis grills would be better at rotisserie, wheras there would be no difference between the early Silvers vs the last ones for that use.
 
Yah, the 1000 grills are definitely going to be better for a roto, but I think all the Silver B's and C's used the same shallower box. I don't think there would be any difference in performance between an early silver B over a later one.

Yes! I failed to mention that Bruce knows rotisserie really well, too! I am just a wannabe but having landed one in a trade hopefully not much longer:wsm:
 
Jon, I have only been using a roto for about a year. But, just do some googling for recipes and you are set. You will soon learn what works good for you and what doesn't. I highly suggest adding a smoker box if you intend to do any cooking with a roto. You just can get that real smoke flavor without it. No spices or sauces will do what real smoke will do.

I bought the "V" shaped one off Amazon for about $17. It fits between the flavorizer bars next to a burner that you have running. Typically, you will only have one burner running (maybe two) when using a roto anyway and you just put it next to that one. I always use the front burner for indirect roto cooking and then put the smoker box between the front flavo bar and the second one.

The smoker box is the thing with the holes in the top in the front of the grill.

Since the upper exterior dimensions of the fire box (between the older x000 and the newer B, C etc) grills is the same I would think the rotisserie setups should be interchangeable. I will soon find out as I prepare to sell my Summit in favor of the more reliable and easier to maintain Genesis Silver B I picked up last fall. One interesting thing I found. The heavy rod type grates from the Summit were a direct fit into that Genesis HOWEVER the cast iron grates from the Genesis did not fit into the Summit. Seems Weber saw fit to add 4 little "ears" or extrusions in the side castings of the Summit fore box so standard Genesis CI grates will not fit. 5 minutes work with my little air powered die grinder and a small cutoff wheel BOOM the Summit now rocks the CI grates from my Genesis. Now all I need to do is find a way to get that side burner on it and bye bye Summit. Over the years it was a nice grill but it's more difficult and expensive to maintain and that front panel just too prone to rust out. So I think it will be time to cut my losses. Beside the proceed of the same will help pay for my SS grates for the Wolf. Since I have 2 sets of orifices (NG and LP) for the Genesis come winter the Genesis can be moved to garage and set on LP summer set back on NG and on the deck.
I even have a blue lid for the Summit I may clean up and install just to give it a little more pizazz when I sell it and maybe the buyer won't notice the CI grates. Kinda sad though. That Summit has been on the deck for a lot of years. Going back to my mini van days and youngsters (my 2 daughters) in the house. Now it's one grown daughter and one grandson (no more mini vans for me) :D SUVs baby!

Love that smoker box. I have been sticking the wood chips between the flavorizer bars but that always leaves lots of ashes in the grill. I need to get me one of those boxes. The smoker boxes on top of the flavorizer bars don't work that well since they are too far of the burner tubes.
 
I tried the tin foil, and found it adequate, but not as dependable. The SS smoker box is much more convenient as well. Well worth the $15 IMO.
 
I like to avoid using as much aluminum foil as possible. Mainly from an environmental perspective. I prefer to use reusable containers.
 
I have to admit, that while I really like my SS smoker box, environmental reasons didn't factor in at all. When I got done using foil, I would throw it in the nearest trash bin usually.

I also tried using the aluminum drip pans with a bit of aluminum foil covering it, but that was a big PIA as well.
