I have visited the nakedwhiz site and would like to try some of the lump charcoals discussed on this page, but can’t seem to find anything except Cowboy at Lowes or Home Depot and Royal Oak at Wal-Mart. Maybe central Ohio is not the best place to find a wide variety of Lump, any suggestions?

Also, what should you look for in a good charcoal lump or briquets?
 
I will vouch for Royal Oak at Walmart, as will many other members.

If you have that available, get it - I'd say you'll be pleased.

I've done high heat (350+) for 5+ hrs, and low and slow (250) for ~18 hrs with a full ring of Royal Oak.
 
I will second the vouching on the Royal Oak. It may not be "the best", but it's darn good lump. Don't hesitate to use it and if you're getting a good price on it all the better.
 
If one of the wal marts near me will get RO in, I am going to get some. Do a search for Big Green Egg dealers near you. They sell their own brand of lump which i have found to be good. I just use it for grilling though as they are quite proud of it($$$).

BGE lump is made by RO.

Look for it at smaller stores. ACE, True-Value etc. In Maryland, alot of the Liquor stores sell lump. Heating oil/coal places also sell lump. I get my Humphrey's at a Heating Fuel Co. in Reading PA. HTH
 
Hey Jason - one other tip that might help you find a supplier. Look up roller and or feed mills or supplies. They often sell lump charcoal. It has farm and blacksmith uses. That's where I get mine and it's at wholesale prices. Just give a few a call to see if they sell charcoal. You might luck out.
 
Jason, I'm about 55 miles north of you, and I've run into the same thing, except our local wally doesn't even carry RO, only K. Our Lowes does carry RO, but they are out, and have been for some time.

If you find some good lump, please post as i'll drive down to get some.

I get Ozark Oak (one of the top rated lumps on nakedwhiz) locally at a butane shop.

Pick one of hte lumps, then call the manufacturer directly and ask them who their distributor is in your area. I called the area distributor and he directed me to a local retail store (the butane gas company) where I now buy it.

What Jeff says!! That's how I did my research years ago as well as my advice above. Good luck. There's good lump around Dublin somewhere!!
 
I really like Royal Oak as well, but lately have been using Gordon Food service (GFS) lump as it is cheaper. I've heard that it's made by Royal Oak, but I seem to get more large pieces, and less dust in the GFS brand
