I sit mine on the grates of my gasser until it is cool.

I usually light mine in the performer, then I can set it on a landscape stone to cool after that i hang them from a iron bird feeder hanger by my deck so they are close at hand for the next cook.
Love the performer, it does many thing so well.

I light mine on the sideburner of my genesis, if not I will place on the charcoal grate of performer and the light it with igniter.

I use 2 extra pavers and leave a gap inbetween for even more air
