Charcoal Challenged

Does anyone else have trouble opening their Kingsford with that black tear off thingy at the top of the bag? I cook on the Weber 3-4 times a week so you would think I could master this most basic of pitmaster skills. But alas I am deficient. I think the instructions should read 1. Tear off a half inch of the tear off thingy or until it separates from the bag. 2. Remove pocket knife from pocket. 3. Gently cut along seam until you have an opening big enough to pour charcoal into chimney. 4. Enjoy!

You may substitute a pocket knife for scissors.

Exactly what I do. :)

Id you look at the stiching, there should be a tail to it. Of you pull it, it will unravel real easy.

Well thanks for the advice but really that was supposed to be humorous. I guess I'm as good at humor as I am at opening a bag of Kingsford!
I got the joke. That foolish thing always breaks off 2 inches in and then I hack the bag open with my jack knife.

I have a cast iron dutch oven lid lifter thingy that I smack the bad with and presto chango the bag has a big hole in it.

The last batch I got from Home Depot the strips did not tear cleanly. I thought I was beginning to lose my touch.

You'd be surprised how long I did it wrong without reading the instructions. Yes, there are instructions on the bag :). Who would have thought it made a difference if you tore it off whe facing the front of the bag vs the back.

I am awful at opening charcoal, especially Kingsford and Royal Oak. I don't carry a pocketknife anymore since campus frowns upon it. I guess I should keep a utility knife close to the Performer and mini, but here lately I've just been taking my kitchen shears outside. Whenever I haven't used something to cut the bag the entire top ends up torn all the shreds and getting it to close is a real pain in the........ You know.

Getting it to pour out right when it's all shredded is a pain too. Guess I'll be stuck with scissors forever since I suck at the pull tab. BTW, I keep all my odds and ends BBQ and grilling tools stored on the top grate of my Brinkmann electric smoker. Probably the best use for it and definitely the most I've used it for sure, provides me with an easy to access and fairly moisture free area for rib racks, cold smoker parts, cooling racks for pans, etc. Getting my moneys worth out of it finally. :p
