Can you believe it?

Hmm a little bit of that meat glue and you could get really "creative".

Wow - the future agribusiness is bringing to the masses....

No thanks.

That's just not right...at all. Supposed to be a more tasteful version of a suckling pig or something?

Well, there's some really messed up juries nowadays, so no surprise what might come out of a focus group. Really sad and in poor taste IMHO.

McDonalds also sells the McRib and people like them. These items (injected turkey for ex.) wouldn't be sold if people didn't buy them, but I am sure most on this board stay away from.

Russell, you really think this pork "product" falls into the same category as boneless rib meat sandwiches and injected turkeys?

The McRib is basically pressed pork in the shape of a rib. The Mini-piglet is also pork but in the shape of a mini-pig. So... they seem to fall in the same category. In either case, most TVWBB'ers wouldn't buy either.

As for "injected turkeys", it seems that most TVWBB'ers prefer non-injected turkeys. But because of the rest of the population will make a "moister" turkey when enhanced, that's why they sell them that way(of course lowering the cost by making people pay for the injection is another story).

The point I was trying to make is that - no matter how much I like or dislike a product, if someone can make money selling it, they will sell it.

Oh how I love a good debate in the morning

So what's the basic ingredients of a brine? About the same as a lot of enhanced turkeys... so not exactly the same as if Tom Turkey was processed to potted meat and molded into his own likeness. Think that'll be at Costco by next Thanksgiving? Hope not.

But thanks for the education on the McRib. I had no idea and haven't had one since I was a kid, but I'm not surprised in the least. Wonder if McDonald's would sell any if most folks knew they didn't contain rib meat. Bet most everyone wonders what the heck this mini-pig is, though!

Nevertheless, I agree with your point about selling. If there's a market for this molded pork piglet though, that's kind of sad and I'm still kind of surprised such a thing would show up at a Costco. Guess if it comes and goes, there wasn't much of a market after all.

Sorry, I can't see why this shape is worse than let's say the regular Spam- shaped box.

A novelty, yes, but how food looks has something to do with what it tastes.

Try mixing some green food color in your glass of milk, and then try to drink with your eyes open..

While I find this "piglet" unappealing, I'd have to say quality-wise it's (probably) not any worse than most of the pre-packaged lunch meat you find in any grocery store.....and made the same way....which isn't saying much for the quality and production techniques of such items.
Chalk one up for Costco's marketing team for trying....I wouldn't be surprised to learn these things are flying off the shelves.

Agreed.

Well, distastefulness of the shape aside, that would be some expensive Spam...and that wouldn't be right, either.

Dave: "Distastefulness" is an opinion. While I have no interest is this abomination I don't see anything wrong with someone's attempt to market it. The consumer can make his/her choice.

Opinions, reactions, judgments, whatever. Everyone has 'em, and that's just the way the Creator made us all.

The point though, isn't whether it's wrong or not for someone to market the phony pork piggy. It's summed up in the OP's title and the first few poster's REACTIONS to said piggy.

That looks nasty. May taste great but I'll never know.

I think Jules from Pulp Fiction sums it up best: Sewer rat may taste like pumpkin pie, but I'd never know 'cause I wouldn't eat the filthy m****f*****"
