C Code WSM question

Just picked up a C code from craigslist. The previous owner put a thermometer in the dome. Problem is, it is too close to the lip and doesnt allow the dome to sit down in the mid section. I want to remove it, but what can I fill the hole with? Would just putting a gasket on the middle section allow it to seal?

If I understand the problem - probably not - can you take it out, put a couple of washers on the shaft, insert the shaft and tighten down the nut inside the lid. That will extend the dial outside the center body.

Maybe fender washers would work? I can't tell how big the hole is. If the hole is small it's a piece of cake to put a washer on each side and bolt them together. It looks like most hardware stores have them up to 2 and 1/2 inches. But that big has 1/2 inch hole in the center. If you need that big of a washer. Get some smaller ones also to cover the center holes. They come in all kinds of different sizes. You can probably find them bigger than 2 and 1/2 if you really search (google)

How big is the hole? If the thermometer is threaded into the lid, it's often a 3/4" hole. If so, you can use a steel knockout plug. For example, https://vetco.net/products/3-4-metal-button-hole-plug They come in larger and smaller sizes, too.

If it's a small hole, I'd find a really short screw with a head big enough to cover the hole on the outside, shoot it with some shiny black BBQ paint, and fasten it on the inside with a nut.

Or here's a crazy idea. Drill it out large enough to accept one of Weber's silicone grommets so you can insert probe thermometers into the lid. :D

Or another crazy idea. If it's a small hole, fill it with JB Weld Highheat, sand it smooth, and touch-up the paint. Similar effort shown here: Porcelain Repair.

But assuming you're trying to keep this first year grill as original as possible, I'm try #1 or #2.
