Butts sticking to the grill.

I was wondering if any of you gurus out there have a solution to keep your butts from sticking to the grill. I use the minion method so I doubt oiling the grill beforehand works, besides I put my butts fat side down. I guess the upside is pulling chunks off and snacking but at the end of my butt cooks I have a bit of manuevering to get them up. I wanted to know what you do.

Oil does help a lot. Also, use a big spatula to get under the butt - that will lessen the tear off.

clean grates help. honestly I rarely ever even touch the butts until its time to foil. Sometimes it happens, most of the time it doesnt stick. It could be because the fat cap. I always go fat cap up if I havent trimmed it off (which I also do 95% of the time

No guru here, but Shawn W came up with the idea of using a properly sized piece of parchment paper under a Meatloaf.
I tried it on a coupla butts, FC down, and no sticking.
Not something I do all the time, but give it a try and see what you think. X2 on the big spatula.

Eric,

I have been going back and forth with fat cap up and down lately. I don't mind the fat cap stick a bit when it's down, but it makes the grates harder to clean if you don't burn it off.

I have noticed starting with a clean grate and spraying with pam before putting the butt on helps a lot. By clean grate, I don't mean shiny, just everything brushed off so there is nothing for the butt to stick to.

As for the pam/oil, starting with the MM won't have an affect on this. Unless there are direct flames to burn up the oil, it's going to stay there. It will take the fat cap awhile to begin to render, so you need something between the grate and the cap until then to keep it from sticking. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the input guys, I will have to look into the parchment idea. Don't get me wrong, its not a ton of pork that sticks and I keep my grates clean but I was looking to find out what the masses were doing. Made it worse the last smoke, I was at my uncle's and forgot to pack my monster spatula.

Thanks again,
Eric
