Briquette suggestion besides K

I'm new to smoking in the past 2 years. I've almost exclusively used Kingsford Blue for my long cooks. Now that I'm comfortable with that I'm looking to try something new. Does anyone have suggestions for briquettes they like? I don't have just a ton of options of where to buy as I'm in a smaller town. We do have the following stores: Sam's, Walmart, Lowes, Menards, Ace. If you don't mind, please post as to why you would prefer the other brand over "K". Thanks in Advance.

Wicked Good makes lump briquettes that are almost a billion times better than K. I use K for grilling, Wicked Good for smoking.

I like Rancher sold at Trader Joes under their label when available which is usually between Memorial Day and end of August up here. I buy enough to last through winter. Last year cost was $7 for 18 lbs. Supposed to be all natural.
I like lump, but it isn't available much up here. When Walmart has RO lump, I stock up
I've used K and it's ok, but the smell on light up bothers me

Mike, Do you know where you can buy "Wicked Good"? </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Ah yes, the eternal question. It's actually quite a pain here in Boston. My neighbor is close with a relatively local BBQ place, and when they get it in we usually try to pounce on at least half a pallet. I would try contacting some local BBQ places.

Then again I'm betting most people have an easier time finding it than us North East folk. We're kind of the outlaws against the gassers.

Go to their website. They list retailers, two in Kansas. Maybe one near you. Rather expensive compared to others, but good. Can order on line but freight is a killer Also their lump is very good

Ha, **** you for helping out a fellow BBQ'er!! No worries.

Shipping is def. a killer, and we usually have to just wait until the local place gets a big shipment, and the stuff goes fast.

Here's another vote for Stubb's, plus Lowe's puts it on sale frequently. I got mine for $5.00 per 15# bag there.

By me Menard's carries RO briqs and lump year round. I buy whichever is on sale and the briqs are comparable to stubbs IMO.
They recently changed the shape.

This is the charcoal that I like also. I use it for grilling and use RO lump in the WSM's.
Both Trader Joe's that are fairly close to my house have told me that they should have it by the 3rd or 4th week of February. I bought two bags Christmas week and I am out. Last year I was able to get it all winter. Had to buy a bag of RO Premium Briquettes yesterday from KMart.

Personally, I found that Royal Oak and Stubbs simply didn't burn long or hot enough for my liking. I had to continually refuel my Backwoods cooker on an overnight smoke. Ended up using 3 full bags of Stubbs, when I normally would have got away with using less than 1 bag of Wicked Good.

Somebody has to ask so it might as well be me. What is the reason you are looking to change? When I started grilling I bought into all the internet bashing againest KB and swore it off with out ever trying it. I used enough of other brands to say what I liked or disliked about each. But when KB went on sale for 40 lbs for 7.97 at the holiday time, the case was closed for me. Everyone has there reason and I don't question that. But for me it came down to quality with value.

I've become partial to the Royal Oak Chef's Select.
If you have a DoIt Best hardware store nearby, you can order it on their website and have it shipped to store for free. It runs $19.00 for a 40 lb bag. It works great in the WSMs, and has a really clean hardwood aroma. It's about the only natural briquette that's available to me anymore.

Well I just use lump but I normally get RO or Wicked Good. RO is cheaper but WG has a better flavour if your grilling and not using any smoke wood.

John,

I am Royal Oak fanboy. I use both their lump and briqs. You can get the lump at Wal Mart (but they only carry it seasonally). You can get both at Menards year round.

I like RO because it smells better than Kingsford, and the lump is remarkably consistent bag to bag, with almost no sparking.

You can also get Stubbs at Lowe's. I bought a few bags on super sale last Spring. It's very good, but produces a little more smoke for a little too long than I'd like from charcoal. But it burns well and smells good.

just got an order of wicked good the other day.. yes shippping is a lot, but i usually order once a year so i justify it that way.. i love the lump!! the briquettes are great also, but they are very fragile and i dont think the veggie binder holds that great which can be a problem when i have used the minion method as they crumble and leve a lotta ash.. as far as stubbs it is a real nice briquette, but i have noticed a lotta ash the last time i used it, also it now says made in USA, before it was paraguay, and one time it said mexico..bottom line is u have too try them and see which u like most...

I use RO lump in my WSM's. I use TJ's (Rancher) briquettes in my OT's. Trader Joe's won't have any briquettes for a couple more weeks. Bought a bag of RO briquettes last week and will need to get another bag soon. Heard someone say "Sam's Choice" WalMart house brand yesterday. This is what I used before TJ's started to carry their own brand. Think it's made by RO. Going to stop by today and pick up a few bags.

It all depends on yer budget! Try some off brands of whatever is available close by yer pad! I found an off brand made by royal oak for 5 bucks for 18 pounds. I buy kingford when on sale otherwise a grab a bag of the cheap stuff every time I shop at Sav A Lot.
