I've been using Kinsford Competition briquettes with success. This weekend, I tried Royal Oak lump.

The RO did ok, but I had to have my vents open much more than with the Kingsford.

Is this normal?
 
Normal? Not really. As a rule, lump generally burns quicker than briquettes.

K competition burns quite fast for a briquette though, and did you have a lot of smaller pieces of the lump? Packing a lot of smaller pieces of lump has been the only time I've been surprised at how slow lump burnt. The only other thing is that maybe the lump got wet before you got it?
 
I don't have good luck with any of the Royal Oak products. Kingsford Blue bag is the only one I have consistent cooks with. My buddy swears by the Stubbs charcoal.
 
All I have been using lately is RO or Cowboy lump. Mostly cowboy because that's more readily available. Haven't used the KComp because I read here that it's basically like regular K just more expensive.
 
Have not used the K-Comp, but was surprised how much ash there is with regular Blue. I had to seasoned my Chaney grill and was instructed to burn a full bag of Blue, no cook just light it, close the lid and let it burn ... Wow, I'll bet there was 1/4 of a bag of ash. No wonder the vents get plugged on a WSM. I normally use RO as I can find it, burns pretty well, has very little ash and costs less than the K.
 
I made the mistake of buying Royal Oak briquettes..cause they were so cheap. Not impressed...and wont buy again.

Lump burns differently depending on how you stack it and how big the pieces are. I prefer Stubbs or RO but have been using K blue because I bought about 12 tons of it at the Memorial Day sales. They all work once you learn how they burn.

I have been using the Kingsford competition a lot lately. partly because the Lowes by me has it on clearance for 3.98 a bag. I like it for grilling, it burns very hot and has less ash than the blue.

For the smoker I like Kingsford blue its very consistent. The last two times I used the minon method with the Kingsford Competition in the smoker it seemed to ignite the unlit charcoal very fast and my length of burn was much shorter.

As far as lump charcoal goes, I like the red bag of RO lump you can get at most Walmarts. The green bag of RO lump from Menard's I don't care for as much, the pieces are a lot smaller than the red bag.
