Bottom grate help!

I need to replace the bottom grate ASAP. Do any of the big-box hardware retailers carry the 17" replacement? My tried and true local Ace Hardware doesn't have it.

No, That's a call to Weber item only. You might be able to find a non Weber one that might fit, i.e. Charbroil or such. Grab your tape measure and good luck.

True, but is it safe to eat meat off the charcoal grate?

Ok well here's my dilemma....I'm cooking two Boston Butts and one small brisket. The butts are 8lbs/each and would normally be on the top grate. I am cooking the brisket to be used with a side dish--no more than 2 lbs. I don't think there is enough room to wedge the brisket in between the butts. What should I do?

If I was in that much of a bind, I would go buy the 22" kettle charcoal grate from wherever, cover it with regular foil, and then pierce through the foil so heat and smoke can circulate through but the meat still doesn't touch the bare metal. I wouldn't cook on the charcoal grate itself, new or not. Even if you use it in this manner only one time, you're still going to probably replace your charcoal grate at some point down the road, and you'll have one when you do.

On edit: Well, that grate doesn't fit the WSM as a charcoal grate, but if you have a 22" kettle...

Yes Same size as the Lower cooking grate from a 22.5" kettle. The 22.5" charcoal grate is just not plated. It will rust up on you unless you take great care of it, but It'll get you buy for now. No worries using it as a food grate. Just clean it really good. They put oil on it to protect it so it won't rust up.

Good point. I already own a 22" kettle, so I guess I can cover and perforate my existing charcoal grate for the mean time.

**Edit** if I cover the bottom grate with a substantial amount of aluminum foil, won't that prevent the dripping grease from the pork butts above to be caught by the water pan? I've had a small grease fire in the WSM before and it was pretty scary.

Wouldn't be the first time HD's website got something wrong.

The WSM cooking grates are supposed to be nickel plate, but if you ask me, I only think that's true of the bottom one, or at least it's heavier plate than the top one.

Tony, Not sure but I have both of them grates (brand new) right in front of me and the WSM lower grate is plated and the 22.5" kettle charcoal grate is not.

i have bought a 22.5 charcoal grate for my kettle and i am pretty sure it is the exact same grate that the WSM came with. right down to the 2 cross bars on the bottom of it. weber.com doesn't have a parts list for the WSM parts, but i bet it's the same number as the 22.5 charcoal grate

Russell, what if you put your brisket on a wire rack like a turkey roasting rack and then put it on the grate if your worried about it.

bryan how long ago did you buy the charcoal grate. i know they used to be non plated, but the last 2 i bought i'm pretty sure they were. i just wonder why the one that comes with the WSM has to 2 cross bars on the bottom like all the charcaol grates they make. even the one for the WSM itself.

The WSM charcoal grate is part no. 72601, 15¼" diameter. The 22" kettle's is no. 72801 and 16½".

yes, doug, but what is the part number for the WSM bottom cooking grate? that is the grate in question. i wouldn't bet a pay check or anything, but it wouldn't surprise me if it's the same as the 22.5 charcoal grate

That's what we're saying-- the WSM bottom cooking grate (part no. 70701) is a plated 22" kettle's charcoal grate.

Tony, I've had them for several years 3-4 and bought direct from Weber. It is the same grate but with different part #'s for the one that's plated and for the one that's not.

i see. i'll be at home depot tomorrow. i'll look at the ones there. but like what was said earlier. a rack under the meat will help in a pinch.
