Bone in Turkey Breast Kroger Sat Sunday only.


 
Looks like turkey is going to be relatively inexpensive this year for the holidays. I grabbed a Young Turkey about 11 lbs last week at Walmart and cooked it up on the roto on my Genesis. It was $.84 per lb. I think the whole turkey cost me less than ten bucks.
 
We picked up 2 this am at Fry's Sun City, our local was out and substituted full turkeys. Don't want to pay for the extra stuff we won't use anyway. One for Thanksgiving, one in freezer for another day.
 
When you cook turkey I've found it helps to rub it down with bacon grease. Helps it slide into the trash :D Sorry. Not a turkey guy but honestly I appreciate one that is cooked properly. Just had to get that one in there :D
 
Yeah --- I was kicking myself for not picking up a breast or two last week for $1/#..... I still 'had' a smoked turkey breast in the freezer - pulled it out a couple of days ago ---- DAMN - I had forgotten just how good they are!!!!

I see that QFC (owned by Kroger) has JenniO whole birds for $0.59/# this week..... I'm debating if I want to dedicate freezer space for one..... a breast would have been easier..... I'll have to scope it out and see if I can score a smaller 11-14# bird.
 
I snagged a 13.5#er yesterday.... I was chatting with a buddy about where the break even point is between a 99cent breast vs a 59cent bird --- we both concluded that a 6-7# breast comes from ~12-14# bird.... so even a little more for the bird gets you the bonus dark meat! Just a bit more work breaking it down.

Debating whether I will roti it or spatch it on the kettle or the WSM..... it will take a week and a half to thaw, so I have time to decide.

Edit to add --- I should have stated that the whole birds are JenniOs --- the breasts before were Festivs and some other obscure brand.... Not that would be to picky at those prices.

Those are some awesome prices for meat. I bought a Butterball at $.94/lb yesterday and figured that was good. I was initially looking for a Breast only, but the much lower price with the extra dark meat swung me to the full turkey. I think it was about 15 lbs. It will be the Thanksgiving bird and with the mostly dark meat left over, I will be making some Chicken (Turkey) soup.
 
Yeah --- I've been really surprised how cheap they are this soon before Tgiving.... Those are prices that you usually don't see until well after the holidays when they are trying to blow out stock. OR have the requirement of 'WITH a $25-50 purchase'.

I was calling around to friends and neighbors to see who had some extra freezer space..... NOONE did. I just couldn't let such a good deal like that go by.... I figured a 12-14#er was the same as two big chickens.... no problem there.

I have a neighbor who is the restaurant manager at a casino - he has been the 'turkey fairy' for me and the neighbors handing out free birds for the last 4-5 years since they always end up way too many (for some reason the asians kinda despise turkey ?!?!? and don't take them). Last year I ended up with FOUR turkeys for free!!! I talked with him the other day and he informed me that they have stopped handing out birds..... sadly. So, I don't feel too bad about picking one up at these prices.

Definitely nice to see these low prices on turkeys this soon before T-Giving. We'll probably end up with 3 in the 13-15 lb range in the freezer for later cooks, and do a fresh one for T-Giving.

Speaking of that, anyone here have a good bourbon brine recipe?
 
Our regional Meijer chain has their house brand turkeys for $.49/lb, .39/lb for loyalty members, no purchase necessary. Time to smoke some turkeys!

Overall my fist WSM Thanksgiving was a success. Everyone loved the bird and people who usually stay away from the breast meat due to others drying it out had second helpings of breast meat commenting it was the "moistest" they'd ever had.

The bird was a 19 lb. natural fresh turkey. I brined her in my Jack Daniels/Maple Syrup brine for 24 hours, then air dried for about 12 hours. Skin was excellent! Great tip on the drying. Pulled her out of the fridge and iced down the breast for a little over an hour (more on this below). Smoked her on the top rack over 2 1/2...
