Bittin again but NEVER again

Switched from KB to Stubbs charcole about 3 years ago and never looked back with great success. After reading alot of post from fans of KB and the excitement of the Home Depot sale I decided to give KB a try once again and best of all save some money. I bought 10 twin packs hoping to be set for awhile on charcole.

I am now on my second cook using the KB and now wondering what have I done. I can't keep the temps up and am using way more fuel using the same methods as I do with Stubbs. It has now come back to me clearly why I switched to Stubbs in the first place. I guess I have plenty of charcole to use for grilling but for smoking I'm going back to Stubbs 100% and won't get bitten again.

that's to bad rodney... i love kingsford AND stubbs along with royal oak chef's best.

butt you got me wonderin'... if you knew you did not like kingsford, why buy 10 twin packs?

Well I'm wondering now why 10 packs my self, I guess the price seemed right and it had been a number of years since I used it I had forgotten my luck with KB. Don't get me wrong, KB will get the get the job done but to me Stubbs is far better and way more consistent. I know the debate will never end on the different brands and type of charcole but it has for me. Stubbs for all low and slow and long cooks, Royal Oak lump for all high temp cooks. I guess every one has to figure out what works for them and stick with it.

I used a bag of Stubbs when I first got my OTS. I like all the qualities of it as well as the flavor when grilling, but as much as I use will have to stay with KB sale prices. Now if Stubbs does goes on sale....

stubbs or KB, i can cook with anything. whatever is on sale works best because the meat doesn't know the difference anyway.

KB gets the job done HH or low and slow, i have never had a problem getting temps high or low. I can cruise my WSM at 225 or crank it up to 400 with KB. For grilling KB gets plenty hot for steaks etc...and the price is the best bang for your buck buy far not even close. When HD has a sale i buy enough for the whole year no messing around.

That doesn't sound like a KB problem.

I found I didn't like the smell from KB ... more coal smell than wood which seemed to transfer to the food when using the minion method. I now stick with natural hardwood briquettes and am experimenting with some sugar maple lump now.

I switched to Stubbs about a year ago. Like Derek, I didn't like the smell of KB and that smell carried over into the taste of my food. Now I only use Stubbs and Royal Oak Lump. I usually check Lowes for specials on Stubbs. About 2 or 3 times a year they put it on sale for 4 or 5 bucks a bag and that's when I stock up.

Hey Jim - how do you like that RO Chef's Select?? How is it compared to Royal Oak Lump or Stubbs??

Rodney, don't feel bad. I too buy KB for the price, and other than for general grilling, I often use the better part of a chimney's worth of it to start smokes. Used Stubbs for years, but have been real happy with the K comp lately. Costco has the best price 'round here.

Never had a problem with Kingsford, start up - smell or any other complaints mentioned by others... Chef's and Stubb's i only buy on occasion (or if it's on sale)
I've only used RO lump once or twice and don't remember the results...

Hmmm - there is a doitbest store not too far from the pad. Maybe I might roll down there and pick some up and give it a shot. I usually only buy my Stubbs when its on sale at Lowes - but it hasn't been on sale in a while and 20 bucks for a 40lb bag of the RO Chef's Select is a decent deal. Plus they also carry RO Lump which means I won't have to go to the Twilight Zone...AKA WalMart to get my lump.

russ, i believe you need to order the stuff from doitbest.com THEN pick it up after it is delivered to your store.
that is how it is HERE, it may be different in your area of America.

Another good deal is 18 pounds of Rancher at Trader Joe's for seven bucks! It says it Trader Joe brand but we know who really made it (hint it ain't Cowdung)

I called over there and they told me I could walk in and make my purchase. If they don't have it in stock (which they did when I called) I could order it online and pick it up at the store. Either way it doesn't matter to me.
