Can any one suggest the best way to do temp. would I need to know the temp. in the cooker ? or should I get a wireless meat therm.? I have a oven thermometer on the cooking rack, and I can keep the temps pretty good. are theese wireless thermometers a waste of money ?? any Ideas ??? thanks..........AL

There are a lot of ways to measure temp. Look in the Operating Tips & Mods section of this site. Personally, I think the wireless therms are a waste of money in that I bought one, used it for a while and now I don't any more. It was a fun toy for awhile but now I just rely on my thermometer that I have mounted through the rivet on the top vent. Simple but effective. After you've used your WSM for awhile, you'll know how it works and how to keep temps stable. Once mine is stable, I don't have any concerns about going to sleep at night on my overnighters. If money's an object, I'd pass on the wireless. If you have some extra money, it wasn't a bad toy. In my opinion, mount a thermometer and get a Thermapen. That's all you need.

I use an electronic temp probe through the top damper. Hasnt let me down yet and has a large enough display that I can easily look out the back door on my patio and see what the temp is. Of course I think once you get used to the WSM it's almost like a set-it-and forget it type cooker. Holds temp nicely for a looooong time
