Best charcoal to use !

I'm a convert from KBB to RO Chefs Select for smoking simply because of less ash with the RO. I do think it burns a bit cleaner also. For lump I have only tried RO because it has been readily available locally.

I use K because it's readily available everywhere and burns consistently. I've been known to use whatever lump I can find for grilling, though.

I found a place near me in Indian Trail, NC thats suppose to have the RO chefs select so I may have to check it out, they had the pellets for my Traeger there., mostly I use what is on sale so at the moment I have Kingsford Comp and blue bag, Trader Joe's and RO lump.

I agree with Dale53 on this issue. I have spent years practice cooking (family & friends) for competition events, and find the Kingsford Original to be the most consistant. I add Pecan chunks (not chips) for the smoke effect. When cooking Brisket, I add White Oak for the smoke effect. In competition one cooks for what one thinks the Judges like, which might cause the dogs to leave back home. If competition is not the case then cook for what the majority favor in your back yard.. Keep on smokin'....

I found a butcher shop nearby that carried RO chefs select last summer but apparently the guy who supplied it died and now they dont carry it.There is a Do it Best not far from me and Im going to do the ship to store thing, what confuses me is if you look at the RO website they dont even show Chefs Select, but they do show a new one called "100" all natural briquettes, which I havent seen, they also dont show "Embers" which is sold at Home Depot........, weird, whats up with the secrecy anyway?

Best charcoal????Yikes, why no ask an easy question like the best colour, pickup truck or NFL team?

Not sure if you'll find a "clear" winner. The Naked Whiz (as noted by someone previously in tis thread) has tons of charcoal reviews. Personally I've liked BGE, and Wicked Good for lump. Both pricier but I found them better than most. Kingsford Original I find to be real good as well as far as briquettes go............that of course is just MHO.

Blue, Chevy and the PATRIOTS - ok that is settled!

I have been using KBB, this winter tried Cowboy - got it real cheap and bought a bag of "Wicked Good" what got me on the wicked good was the size of the chunks, no way most of them would fit in the 14.5 - they will work in the 22.5 however. The Cowboy, I didn't find any trash in 2 bags so far.
This year I am going to try a bunch of different charcoals to figure out what works best for me in both the 14.5 and the 22.5

Been hearing good things about Forest Lumps and found out theres a distribution center of some kind in Tampa, so i'm looking forward to picking up a box or 2 sometime soon.

Wicked Good lump runs a little too big for smaller smokers, but I haven't found ANYTHING that lasts as long for BIG butt cooks on the BIG 22" wsm. That's what I save it for, especially since I'm down to about a bag and a half. I've been using Cowboy and/or Royal Oak lump for everything else, but lighting and bottom layering the charcoal ring with briquettes. I find Stubbs, RO store brands or Chef's Select, and K Comp to be all pretty consistently good.

I have been using Stubbs for grilling and smoking but just found KC @chinamart and still working thru my first bag with good results.

I use KBB exclusively for the Dutch ovens.

Just another vote for RO Chef's Select. It seems to burn somewhere between RO Lump and KBB. If I order it on Monday or Tuesday at doitbest.com I can pick it up at my hardware store on Friday.

I use 3 charcoals, Stubbs mainly for both at home and competitions, then RO Chef's Select, and Kingsford BB. I will buy the Kingsford when it is on sale because I just can't beat the price and it's good for grilling at home for burgers, dogs and chicken and stuff for quick meals when I don't want to "waste" my Stubbs.

I used Royal Oak lump exclusively until Publix starting carrying their own brand of lump charcoal. Been using that ever since. I wish the bags were more consistent, but overall I've been very happy with it, and it's convenient since I'm shopping there anyway.

When I first started using the WSM I used Kingsford, but had a hard time tasting the different rubs applied to the meats. Switched to lump and never looked back.
