Bark on smoke wood?

Got a supply of apple from an apple orchard (sold cheaply as firewood), and free oak from my in -laws' tree. I've got it down to approximately usable size with a miter saw & axe. The bark is pretty thin on the apple, but gets almost an inch thick on the oak. What's your experience with bark on smoke wood? Would it be worth the effort to try to chop it off?

On fruit like apple, I leave it alone.
Thick bark that is easy to remove usually gets removed. I have not heard a conclusive argument either way.....

For apple, I leave it on, but take any lichens off just by scrubbed them with another piece of wood.
For oak, if it's attached good, I leave it on. If it's kinda loose, I'll just take it off.

I always remove thick bark, slice it off with an axe.
