Back to Charcoal - Adventures in Grilling for a Newbie

After decades of casual grilling over propane, I have decided to get a little more serious about outdoor cooking in retirement and I'm going back to charcoal. Did some quick research online and came home this week with a OTG, chimney, charcoal baskets and a bag each of Kingsford briquets & Stubbs lump to try. Also ordered a couple of digital thermometers - actually I went somewhat crazy and ordered the full ThermoWorks kit of thermocouples and meters per AmazingRibs.com (I'm a retired engineer and succumbed to my inner geek :))

Looking forward to the journey and good food .

Retired engineer? Inner geek? You should have a look at the HeaterMeter project here in the forums... And for what it is worth, I too love the gadgets.

Youch! that ain't cheap. Looks great though. For about half the cost I went with the iCelsius wireless.

I wouldn't have spent the money if I didn't plan on using the meters with other probes for some non-cooking related projects. I'm always trying to jury rig temp measurements in electronic gear.
