Automobile Tires

Anyone here ever ran Yokohama tires on their car? Dollar for dollar, do they ride as good as Goodyear or Goodrich tires? Our tire size is 225/60R16.

Yokohama makes good tires. Their Ice Guard winter tire is one of the best I ever ran. The Avid touring all season gripped the road well but the softer rubber compound meant it did not last as long. As for the ride it is hard to tell from vehicle to vehicle as the height of the sidewall really makes a difference and I have not driven the size you have. I put over two million kilometres on twenty one company vehicles in thirty eight years and ran a lot of different brands.
I ran Yokos on my own vehicles for about ten years but switched to Toyos now as they are better bang for the buck. Unfortunately I had more belt separation and balancing issues with Goodyear than any other brand and would not recommend them. Sad, because they used to be really good. IMHO.

I’ve got Hankook on my KIA 30K in and they feel fine, good wear, picked up a screw but, that was an easy fix. The guys at discount tire took care of it free. It took forever but, that’s just because the load of repair projects got bounced around like a pinball!

Had them on a Camry I had. Bought them new at Discount Tire (a company I highly recommend BTW). They ride very smoothly and quietly. BUT they get noisy pretty fast. By about 12k to 15k they began to get noisy. They still performed perfectly though. But if quiet is important I would say go Michelin. On another car I got REALLY good performance with General Tires Altimax (they were directional tread and I forget the series they were) but I got close to 100k miles on them before replacing them. At over 75k miles on them they pulled my little Saturn SL2 through one of the worst blizzards in Chicago area history (early Feb 2011) we got in excess of 25". I did not get all the way home from OHare but I at least got to safe haven at my sister's house in Arlington Hts.

I forgot, but my two daughters are running General Altimax and are getting good wear and performance from them, especially since they got them on sale for a really reasonable price.

They were great tires, but there are a few different ones with Altimax as the name. These were directional tires so rotations were front to back only not X pattern as is the norm. I replaced them with darn near 100k on them finally but even the guys at Discount Tire were shocked at how much tread was still on them. They actually tried to talk me out of replacing them LOL
But, I am very careful. I keep my vehicles in excellent condition, I don't let shops talk me into needless front end alignments, (which really are a waste of money) I watch inflation pressures and adhere to spec on the car except in winter I go 2lbs or so over spec. I tend to get very good miles from my tires but these were exceptional

Thanks for the input!

I've ran Goodyear for 30 years, and they have been the best tire I could ask for, but the ones I purchased of late (same model as the ones I took off), are running stiff and bumpy. The tire store is recommending Yokohama (priced the same as Goodyear Assurance Comfort Tread), and he says it is one of their best sellers.

Rusty, most of GY's tires are pretty good..... personally, with the notable exception of Wrangler RT/S light truck tires. I got a set of those on a used truck in 2006, and were the 1st set of tires I got rid of with usable tread, the truck drove like a pig on roller skates and was almost unusable on slick surfaces. The Firestones that came on my '12 Ram 2500 (bought used in '15,) weren't much better. Both trucks got Michelin LTS M/S II, or Defender (LTX replacement.) Those have been awfully good, I'm now on my 2nd set on the '12.

I don't have an personal experience with Yokohamas. My Civic runs a Continental that's been pretty good for summer use.

Here is what the tire the dealer is recommending...

There are some negative reviews about road noise and tread separation that caught my eye.

Sorry Rusty, I only had experience with the Avid Touring and know nothing about this newer Tourante model.

Installed the Tornante tires (2) Wednesday, and the ride smoothed out quite well around town. Highway driving was fairly smooth too, but the noise level is higher than the Goodyear tires. I wouldn't say they tires were loud, but I am not sure if I would want a whole set. I'll try these for the next 500 miles, and see how I feel then.

Larry, were the General Altimax tires you had the RT43 model? Checked today on my daughter’s car and that is what she has and likes them.
I have General Altimax RT43 on my Daughters Corolla and really like them. They get rave reviews across the net as a great all season tire. They are much quieter than the BF Goodrich G-Force tires that was on the car and after almost 30k miles look like they are hardly worn.
I liked the General tires so much I put a set on my Scion tC, just in the performance version General G-Max-AS-05.
My good friend ran the General Altimax Artic for Winter Tires and loved them as well.

The RT43's are not a directional tire so cross-rotation is possible.

You can read up on the General's at tirerack.com

Another vote for Toyo tires here. That's all we run on my truck, my wife's Acadia and both my teenage sons cars. Great wear, and really quiet.

Our new RAV4 came with Dunlop tires. So this is my first experience with that brand. We'll have to see how they do but so far, they're quiet, smooth and quite stable.

I'm late to the party here. But for future reference, Tire Rack tests a boatload of tires every year and there's tens of thousands of comments on their site. Their database is amazing. I find it invaluable when looking for new tires. I used to look at the skidpad g numbers and braking distance, but now I focus on dBs and smooth ride characteristics. I've used their site for research and purchased from there too.

Thanks much, J !

I'll consider that site the next time.
