OK, here we go. Breville/Baratza came through for me. Shipped a new upgraded motor assembly. Top notch service IMO. Anyway I got it together today. Tried grinding a little bit through it.
Some observations:
Holy smoke is it FAST! Will grind a double shot in only a few seconds.
Pretty solid built unit. (heavy). Not as heavy as the Vario W on the counter.
VERY VERY low static like non-existent similar to my KitchenAid grinder. (this alone may make it a new fav and a keeper for me). I currently have 3 for sale and another Virtuoso+ on the way that is supposedly brand new but does not power up. Stay tuned on that one.
I can see though that the Sette line is likely going to be a maintenance hungry device. I think part of what contributed to the demise of the first gear box was it was pretty "packed" looking like the PO had not cleaned it well. I will remedy this by maintaining it carefully if I keep it.
A couple slight issues, one of my making, and 2 "inherited". During disassembly I broke the plastic mount for the hopper safely switch. It's jumped now. Big deal? I guess only if you turn it on and drop a foreign object in there or put your finger in. I may invest the $17 to replace the rear cover/switch assembly.
Inherited one locking leg of the bean hopper is broken off. It still functions but is not "right"
The other is "weight calibration" is slightly "off" I.E. if you set it for 20 grams you get 18. There is an "offset" setting where timing of the motor stopping has to go just a hair longer than what the scale shows. This is an adjustment. Fairly easy. Or worst case I may have to get some certified weights and recalibrate it.
I think before I do any calibrating though I'll try doing a factory reset on the machine. I'll be running it tomorrow AM for my AM pot of Joe.
You can see in the original motor how totally packed it was with grinds and I actually cleaned it before those photos!

Thanks Larry, I’m not going to go down that rabbit Warren but, I do appreciate your doing all the heavy lifting for someone who buys an appliance and does not do the maintenance. YOU have shown me the error of my ways with my simple Cuisinart grinder! Two bags…tear it down. Five minutes cleaning the stuck stuff and go again! Now, if I’d wake up from whatever Lala land and get back to really cleaning my grills, life will be grand!
Side note, BiL has one of the (beautiful) KitchenAid coffee grinders, I’m pretty sure he is good about cleaning it but, he buys the cheapest crud from Meijers with three excellent roasters within five blocks of his house! Go figure!

Which grinder does he have? The one that looks a little like a mixer (with a glass bean hopper and glass grind bowl?) Or the newest one that looks like this? I used to have the one with the glass bowls but honestly kind of hated it. Very loud, unwieldly to operate, static like CRAZY would shoot fines all over the counter every time I ground. This newest one I currently have is truly a different animal. Very quiet, 0 static, no fines all over. But does not seem to be a "strong" unit. Way too finicky with settings but it does work very nicely
One thing for sure. I have GOT to see some of these things turn over. I'm getting over run with "good deals" :D

His is the old design, glass bowl, candy apple red, never been there when he has run the thing.
You will need hearing and eye protection :D They do have a bit of a cult following because you can fit Mazzer (I guess they're a big deal) burrs in them and make them like some of the more expensive espresso only grinders with a little "tuning".
They are bult like tanks, very powerful too.

Yeah, IDK, but when I had the chance to jump on one listed "for parts", but I could see it was mint cosmetically, I jumped on it. Though I will say at this point the one I am striving for to be a "one and done" are likely going to be one of these 2 units https://www.baratza.com/en-us/product/fortetm-bg-zcg1086?sku=ZCG1086SIL1BUC1A or https://www.baratza.com/en-us/product/variotm-w-zcg987?sku=ZCG987BLK1BUC1A
But yeah that Sette 270Wi is awfully "spendy". It's a pretty cool concept though. With the ring burr rotating rather than the center cone burr. Apparently rotating the ring burr can pull beans through at an incredibly fast rate. IIRC it's rated at nearly 5gram per second! Used it this AM and I have to say that thing "rocks" them out

Sometimes my 270wi grinds to the tenth of a gram, sometimes it can be more than a gram off.
I grind a couple of baskets at a time (for each of us) and transfer a bit from one to the other. It seems to remember the last grind.....
Most of the internals from the Sette 30 and 270 will also fit the 270WI, so a "parts grinder"could be one of these.

Yep, Another thing I see I am totally puzzled by. The owner's manual gives instructions to "calibrate" the scale. Says you need a 500g weight. So I bought one. But the instructions don't work. Instead I found a totally different set so IDK if this was an older or newer instruction set but mine seems to want to use the instruction NOT in the manual but IDK if I am understanding it all correctly but it seems like it's going to need 3 500g weights. I'm thoroughly cornfused.
My Vario W hits the target within .2 every time, usually less. Not sure what it is with this one. Maybe it's just too fast? So fast it can't calculate correctly the timing it needs?

OK, Hank if you ever need this, the instructions in your owner's manual may or may not match how to actually recalibrate the scale if needed. While looking at Reddit I came across these instructions and it worked!

Set your machine's arms to the bin position. Leave the bin off. Plug in grinder while holding preset 3. The display will flash 000. Put the bin on and press start The display will show 1.0.5, then put the first 500g weight into the bin. Display will read Pass Then the display will show 2.1.0 Put another 500g weight in. Pass Then the display will show 3.1.5 Place the third 500g weight in. Pass then it will reboot.

Here is a vid of it plowing through beans LOL. I guess the calibration worked also. Weight was right there within .2g Close enough for hand grenades and horse shoes IMO

Thanks, Larry. Never did this, nor ever heard of it
Been grinding supposed 12g and 13g shots for several years and they worked for me 😇
