Anybody using the ThermoWorks RFX Wireless Probe Starter Kit, its on sale


 
I would, if they ever decide to deliver it. Since ordering it’s been in American Fork Utah, Salt Lake City Utah, Indianapolis Indiana, Roanoke Virginia, Greensboro North Carolina, back to Indianapolis and, for the last two days in Louisville Kentucky, 45 miles from my house. Will it finally arrive or will it go back to Indianapolis for a third time. Your guess is as good as mine.

I researched a bunch of probes and I felt like the Thermoworks RFX was the best option.

Well that is kind of nuts. Was it with USPS? I've looked at it but crazy expen$ive for me.

The only valid complaint I've seen about this, and it's not an issue for me at all, is that the probes and gateway charts are separate. They are basically treated as separate entities, so if you have two probes, you get three charts (the third being the gateway obviously). I use this with my WSK and I have no trouble with the gateway reading the probes. The only issue I did run into was that a probe didn't seem to fully charge, but I realized later it's because I was being a dope and I didn't scrub off the smoke residue off the exposed ends, and one of the charger contacts connects there. After a little scrub, they're working perfectly. I was able to get 15 hours out of the probes without a recharge.

The only thing I've encountered that blocks the signal of the probes badly is foil. As long as I've had the end of the probe sticking through, no problem at all.

My setup is with the gateway close to the grill and connected to wi-fi. I have monitored things while away from home and that also worked flawlessly.

I think it's a great setup and I have used it for several overnight cooks.

I'm happy to answer any questions you have, and thanks for sharing the sale. Might be time for me to get two more probes! edit: whoops, this time the probes aren't on sale separately like they were when I got my kit.

ThermoWorks updated the app (just before thanksgiving) so that you can group probes and base together - allows all to be integrated onto one graph

Look for the “+” in lower right corner of app

I keep looking but haven't bought one as of yet and haven't heard of anybody actually using said setup.

Gotcha. Additional info that I would add is that I 'upgraded' to the RFX after worrying about burning up(?) the probes from the existing thermometers that I was using, the Thermopro temp spike XR. Not having to worry about temps up to 1000deg is nice versus the XR that is only rated for 572deg. I'm still torn about the App only display for the RFX as I really like stand alone displays. The battery life is better with the RFX so far, that's what really prompted me to look into something else, after getting ready to cook a couple times and having the XR base be dead. I've had a few instances of an RFX probe stop reading halfway through a cook, but as Joe noted, that was probably my fault for not cleaning the probe fully. I think the accuracy is better than the XR too. I cook my steaks (usually ribeyes) to 125 before taking them off the grill and with the XR, that was probably closer to 130, or maybe even 135. The RFX seems more accurate as the steaks come out much more medium rare like I'm aiming for.

Only other wrench, I'll throw out there is the Typhur Sync Gold. Almost as high of a temp rating as RFX, base with temp readings and you can use an app and they seem to test well for range, accuracy and other things. Price seems right in line with the RFX looking at the 4 probe packages. If I were to do it again, I might go that route instead.
