Another 420 Restoration

Hello all, just want share a few pictures of my process and hopefully learn a few things and share a few things. All the parts I'm using are Weber parts so it should go pretty smooth. Will be doing some sanding and painting as part of the restoration and preservation but it's all good. Might also add the flip out rotisserie from a 450 I'm not going restore. Here is how I found it from an ad online. I have since completely stripped it down and cleaned up some surface rust from the two side panels and prepped them with rust Reformer before painting. I'll be installing a new cookbox, manifold, lighted knobs, led lights rings, momentary switch, harness, battery and head, lower panel, regulator hose, front and rear fame connectors, wheels, both doors and handles, both tool holders, lid handle and light. I might swap the lid from the 450 since it seems to be in better condition cosmetically but we'll see.

So after reading a very thorough paint thread I picked up the Majic Massey Ferguson Grey paint from tractor supply house. I then compared it to my original side panel and the new bottom panel I received and the colors between the original parts is different but the Mutha Fracking Gray as I call it is a the best non original color IMO. Looking forward to seeing where the painted panel will fall in the color variation.

Side by side of the bottom new panel and the unpainted old side panel.

Looks good. I am trying to decide if I am going to go with gray or all black since I will be repainting my entire frame

Well.... Looks like I might be restoring the 450 as it has more options and utilizing the 420 frame as donor. I have a new 450 cookbox and manifold so it's a no brainer I guess. Anyone have any thoughts? This will also mean I'll have a 420 cookbox and manifold available for someone else of they needs one.

Oh and I thought about painting it black but since I plan to also eventually add the grill station cabinets I figured it wouldn't really matter.

Just wanted to add this picture of the unpreped frame connector with a single coat of Majic MF Gray paint. This paint is truly amazing. It has coverage and self leveling over rust ability although preped will give you a better end result. I won't be using the frame connector in the picture for this restoration since I have two new ones for the top and the bottom is actually in really good shape. Maybe on another build. My 450 cookbox also arrived as I was posting this so the decision has been made to change the tittle to another 450 restoration 😁.

Left side is the original, middle is original painted over rust, and the right is the new part that was ordered. Not bad if you ask me. Last image is just the old and and painted with the can next to it.

Majic paint code is 8-22955-8. Tractor, truck, & implement spray. 20230811_170943.jpg20230811_170834.jpg

Can't believe this light works and let alone the insides look like it never had a battery in it. A good cleaning and maybe a coat of plastic paint or clear to bring it back to it glory days.

Try some vinegar on a q tip and see what you get. I have a new I bought because I didn't gave one but I like the old style of this one vs the new one.
I got it cleaned up and added fresh batteries, but no luck. Fortunately, I have good lighting where I plan to use the grill, but the handle light would have been nice

I have the one in the picture above available for sale/trade negotiable along with lots of other parts.

A few pictures of some of the parts installed today. New bottom panel, 3 new frame connectors, New regulator hose, upgraded to the led knobs, harness and battery, New manifold, New cookbox, New locking caster wheel all 4 corners.. The sides were painted and look really good next to the new parts and old. I also added the new doors and handles as well as the tool holders and lod handle with light. Waiting on the burner tubes and cleaning up the flavorizers and grates. Should be putting it back up on the deck in a few days. More pictures soon.

It's all covered under warranty since the original owner is a friend. The LED upgrade was parts passed down from a buddy who scraped his 460😬 due to a family argument. This 420 is circa 2015 bit had the notches for the led harness and battery Module on the frame. Oddly though it doesn't have the hole for the momentary button. 😢

I shot you that picture. Let me know if it didn't come across. Thanks!
Not yet but just add it here for now.

More updated pictures of the restoration. While installing the burner tubes I noticed they were a bit tight and getting them in required a little persuasion. This resulted in some minor chipping of the enamel in the cookbox and question whether it contributes to the burn/rust out of the cook box. I was able to to campare the chipping on a 450 cookbox and this 420 cookbox and both appear to have the same marks.
