Am I the only one who didn't know this? (Performer grate holder slot in rear)

I just found out that the purpose of the slot in the steel bracket on the newer Performers is there to give us a place to put the wire grate when we have to remove it. Maybe I'm the only one but I'm glad to know now. The first time I used the Performer, I was at a Cub Scout campout cooking for a bunch of people and knew nothing about my newly acquired Performer much less cooking with charcoal. I remember at one point having to set the grate on the grass. I wish I had known about that slot then.

Well, I'll be go to. ....I knew about the lid bale, but had no clue what the hook on the SS was for, I just figured another tool hook! Thanks for the Performer's 101 class!

Yes, Greg-S, that's the one I'm talking about in the back. My 2007 has that same slot, along with some others, I just didn't know what it was for and I don't remember seeing anything in the manual. I didn't know the old SS ones had a hook on the side.

i wasn't sure that's what they were for until you posted the thread!

i suspected that hook on the SS Perf, but never would have guessed about the slot on the new Perfs.

i'm really not as smart as i look.

I didn't know. I put a small hook on mine. It's easier than the handle slot.

Well butter my butt and call me a biscuit! I have a 07 performer and I wondered what that slot was for.

I cook from the rear of my performers all of the time while the wifey gets the front row seat. I have looked at that slot for years now, never giving it a second thought, other than the back matching the front and that slot was where the ignition was located on the front. Told the wife about reading this thread and she tried it out on her last wok cook. Instead of taking the cooking grid over to another grill, she just hooked it into the slot on the rear. When she finished the cook, she promptly came inside, grabbed a broomstick, and proceeded to smack me all over because I hadn't bothered to read the instruction book that came with the grill, and that I had made her feel stupid for all of the times that she had to hunt for a place to put a hot grate while doing indirect cooks and needing to adjust the firebricks to allow the heat to spread for the reverse searing of steaks and such.

Long story short, the wife feels stupid and the husband is black and blue from the beating that he took. LOL
