Aloha from Kona, Hawaii!

Aloha all you smokin' cooks, from Kailua Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii!

After years of miserable "barbecuing" on a propane gas grill, I'm super stoked to be smoking meats on my 18" WSM. My first attempt was St. Louis pork ribs, and they were a hit! So, now I'm hooked.

A little about me:
I'm a Christian guy, single, 44 years old, living the life in God's beautiful creation on an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. I'm a software developer originally from Northern Virginia, and after I wrote a program and sold it, I was able to move to Hawaii 6 years ago and live here until the money runs out! I chose Hawaii because I enjoy scuba diving and I can dive every day of the year here. I also enjoy going to the gym and just riding around on my motorcycle. I'm a technical consultant for my church in Kona, and I enjoy serving God with my computer and AV work. I'm blessed to have a house in Kona with my 2 cats, and a condo in Virginia. Eventually, I will probably go back to working half the year in Virginia as a software developer again, and living the other half of the year in Kona. I really like to cook, and can cook just about any cuisine. Several of us at church are really good cooks, and we get together about once a month and take turns hosting gourmet dinner parties.

Blessings and Aloha!

Hey there Scott! Welcome! Sounds like you're living the dream! Looking forward to seeing what you fire up in that WSM on dee island !!

Welcome to the group. Snowed here this morning so I'm a little bitter about the whole Hawaii thing but I'll get over it. Great to have you.

Welcome aboard...
Don't forget we like pictures. :)

OK, just ran out and took this picture of the WSM in my backyard. It's a little voggy today, but that's the Pacific Ocean in the background and in about 5 hours there will be a really pretty sunset over there, and a beer in my hand.

Welcome aboard Scott. Sounds like you are living the good life out there.

As for your "ignorance" of snow, I am sure that some of us will be posting pictures
in the not too distant future that will help educate you!:)

Welcome, Scott!

Tell us about how you got your WSM...I understand they can be challenging to acquire in Hawaii.

Lowes didn't have it.

Home Depot didn't have it.

The Answer, and where I order 99% of what I need in Hawaii...Three words....

1. AMAZON
2. DOT
3. COM

Thank Holy God for Amazon.com and their free shipping, even free shipping to Hawaii. I have Amazon Prime (not quite 2-days, more like 5-days), and ordered the WSM-18 on Amazon and had it a few days later. The only things that won't ship free from Amazon to Hawaii are HDTV's larger than 32" and most large shop tools (floor-standing drill press, table saw, etc. I've tried).

I think the way Amazon ships to Hawaii is that they truck a bunch of orders to California by UPS Ground to a company called ParcelPool. Then ParcelPool ships pallets full of Amazon stuff to Honolulu. From Honolulu, the local carriers (USPS, UPS, Fedex) do local inter-island delivery.

Welcome!

That's a cool life. I've been to the islands three times and LOVE it! Some of the best roadside chicken in my life was from the Oahu North Shore.

Since you order from Amazon you might like to use the "Amazon shopping" link on this forum which helps Chris fund the site. (It doesn't change your price at all.)
