Ace hardware charcoal sale

A bit disappointed with the Royal Oak Briquettes Ace substituted for the Ace brand. I understand their probably the same just under two different labels.

Did a tri-tip and chicken thighs tonight. They did fairly well through the tri-tip cook, when I removed the tri-tip I threw some chicken thighs on and noticed lots of ash. I actually had to shake my char baskets to shake off the ash (I've never had to do this before this early in the cook). So about 40 minutes into the chicken thighs when normally done I have to shake the char baskets again, and this time notice that I'm running out of fuel and I'm thinking I may have to fire-up the gasser to finish these babies. Using Kingsford I can easily do this cook without having any issues and using Rancher I can do both the tri-tip then chicken and another 45 minute cook of something else. Anybody else having these issues? I'm wishing I hadn't bought 4 bags.

One other thing, my briquettes appears to have wood in it, here's a PICTURE

Maybe just a bad batch??

I picked up 5 bags this weekend at an Ace out at Ocean Shores and I threw a pork butt on earlier. Never used Ace charcoal before, but for 5 bucks a bag, what the hell!

Have you opened any of the other bags and checked the brix out?

That's what my "ACE" labeled charcoal looked like (on one side of each piece), I had never used this brand of charcoal before, so i didn't know what it should look like. I didn't open the "Royal oak" labeled bags yet. Although my ACE seamed to burn fine to me.

non of my royal oak briquettes ever looked like that. i like the stuff and find it better than kingsford in smell, ash and length of burn. odd as this is not usual of their quality.

That's what I'd heard and is why I bought four bags vs. one just to try. I think I'll take it back and see if they'll exchange for non-wood pieces. I imagine it's the wood that is creating the issues with quick burn and ash.

I've used RO Lump and really like it.

On another forum they mentioned that RO from Argentina was bad but American made RO was excellent. Maybe it's the same with the briquets.

larryr, i went out and bought an 18 lb bag of ro briquettes at winco. under 6.00. opened bag and took three briquettes out. had to use a hammer to break them apart. tough stuff. all three were just burned charcoal. no unburned stuff. later i started up a chimney full. that stuff lighted right up. smelled like charcoal with no bad smells. after it was all lit i grilled some beef ribs, sliced pork butt and some sausages. the ro burned long and hot. acceptable ash. so yea, the stuff you got was either sa stuff or a fluke. was happy to find this out as you had me worried. best,
