Access door questions

Hello board! I just got a 22.5 WSM and noticed that the access door isnt fitting flush at all right out of the box. Ive cooked twice on it and some smoke does come out of the sides. you can der see daylight when looking inside the cooker toward the door. Is this really a problem or should it simply have very little affect on the cook.

Thanks!

You could upgrade to the stainless door here and alleviate your concerns:

Or, you can take some time and hand-bend the current door until you get the best seal you can.

That said, the door is not designed to be airtight, so some small amount of leakage is not a problem. However, there is a point where too loose a door could allow more air to the charcoal than you want, making it difficult to keep temperature down. That was my experience, and the stainless door made that issue go away.

I would bend the door to get a good seal. It won't be completely air tight, but it needs to be snug. For me, the test is whether or not the fire goes out quickly once all the vents have been shut. If it does, then your WSM is tight enough to control temps. When I bought my WSM it would run at about 250 with the vents closed. Bending the door got me to the point where the thermometer reads as low as it goes in about an hour. Note - I'm aware the fire isn't out at that point, but it's certainly on its way. I always have unburnt charcoal after a cook.

Andrew, welcome to the forum. It is very common for the door to need some adjustment out of the box. There are many reports here of such. The door bends quite easily just go a little at a time. Over time I have had more trouble with the door latch falling apart and the SS replacement door does not include a new latch. My advice is bend the one you have and call Weber to tell them that your door arrived mis shapened. Enjoy your new toy.

Very good advice. I'll just add that if the temps still won't die down even after the door seems to fit properly, another possibility is an "out of round" condition.
