was planning on doing 4 butts in my 22.5 WSM on friday night for a saturday family get together. I have cooked 2 butts and a brisket at the same time just looking for any help on doing 4 butts? planning on putting the butts on around 1:00 am as the get together is Sat. at 5. should I do 2 on thursday and freeze and then do 2 friday night or do them all at once? any thoughts would be much appreciated

Load it up with all 4, my only suggestion would be to leave the butts out at room temp. for a couple of hours before you throw them on. I usually put the smaller ones on the bottom. I'm doing 4 picnics this weekend.

I would do them all at once..After like 10 hours I like to disassemble the cooker, stir the coals (add some if needed) take the meat from the bottom and put on top and also flip the butts. You do not have to do this but I think it helps the meat get done closer to the same time. Also the butts on top always get better bark!

Chris - I've done 6 at once (3 top - 3 bottom), granted the grates were FULLY loaded but I had no problems and they came out great! Good point from Dean

I don't ever flip, but to each their own. If it works for you, fantastic!

No problem with 4. I did 6 a couple weeks ago. very little change. Just alot of "meat heat sink" going on. left all the vents open for most of the cook just to get to 250 ish with that much meat

I thought cooking <span class="ev_code_RED">FOUR</span> butts at a time was what the<span class="ev_code_RED">18.5</span>" was all about.

I hope you're right Dave. I'm putting 4 on my 18.5" tomorrow night for a club picnic on Saturday. I've never done 4 but I know they fit. Life is good.
