18.5" vs 22.5"

I just went to Home Depot to look for some charcoal. While there I saw my first ever WSM in person. It was the 18.5" model. And man I was blown away at the size/cooking capacity. I can definitely cook for up to 10 people with this size unit. I feel like canceling my order for the 22.5" to get the 18.5", but I did get it on sale. Just a word of advice bigger is certainly better in most cases. But it appears that the 18.5" model kicks arse!

Just to add, I'll stick with the 22" because it is only a small difference in price. Hopefully this post is useful to anyone contemplating between the two.

John, Sears website has the 22.5" listed at $320. However you have to pay for shipping. So what I did, I got a major home improvement store to price match it & with free shipping to their store.

YMMV of course.

Ace Hardware has the 18.5 100$ off at 199.99 instead of 299.99 last time i checked! the 18.5 is Big but the 22.5 is MASSIVE. I thought about purchasing the 22.5 as well but I dont think I would ever need that size unless I did a HUGE cookout, but I've also seen whole turkeys fit perfectly fine on the top grate of a 18.5! The other reason I went with the 18.5 is I heard the 22.5 is a Fuel HOG, dumping a whole ten pound bag in the charcoal bowl was very common so I just decided Id save alittle on fuel and get the 18.5

When I purchased my 18.5 last july, I had never even heard of the 22.5. I can honestly say I 'm glad for it! I may have gone with the "Bigger is better" line of thought myself.
I have cooked for as many as 12/13 people with the 18.5 and have yet to need more space. Don't get me wrong, the 22.5 has its place, but for my needs, the 18.5 was defenetly the right choice.

First time poster long time Weber owner looking to buy a new WSM.

I had to register when I saw Luis's comment of getting the 22.5" for the same price sears has it at $320 but at a competitor. May I ask who the "major home improvement store" is? Lowe's sells them both online but their price match promise is only for local retailers. You did mention Home Depot dont see the WSM's on their site. I too would like to get that price.

Rob N; we are one state apart and I don't see the same $100 deal off @ Ace Hardware for the 18.5". Where did you see the $100 off deal, in store or online?

As you can see I'm not sure if I should get the 18.5" or 22.5". I really loved moving up from my Weber Q to a Genesis, yes it does take more gas but the grilling space is nice. Thanks for your help gentleman!

I actually seen it in stores, I was there buying wood chunks and tryed their frontier brand lumb charcoal when I had seen there WSM for 199.99, this was probably around Feb 15th. If you cant find it I would ask about it, When I seen it, it was high up on a shelf sitten next to the infamous ECB for 30$ HA easily walk past it without even noticing it........

Gee, Luis, if you think the 18" is big, just wait till you see your 22"!

ACE Hardware's that have the 18" listed for $199 are selling the older pre-2009 WSM. At the ACE near here, it's their floor model. The pre-2009 WSM retailed for $199.

J.Kalin,
It wont work with HD because they do not have the 22 in stock. Yes, it was Lowes. You have to call the online customer service. What the rep had to do was call the local store to see if the store manager would agree to price match it. So while I was on hold she called and the manager agreed to 320, plus tax, free shipping to the store. Hope this helps.

If I knew Ace had the 18's at 199, thats a steal!!!

This is how I got my 18" WSM for $199 recently. My local Ace Hardware was selling their floor model at a discount. Its a 2007 version. They told me that they are not even going to carry the 18" version anymore, just the 22" one. I stopped at another Ace the other day and they only had the 22" on display.

Thanks for the great info guys!

Is there anyone selling the current model WSM 18.5" for less than 299? Is there any documentation on the difference between the current model WSM 18.5" and the The pre-2009 WSM?

Chris, that's a good price. Have you ordered a grill from aimtofind.com? I've never heard of them. I just did a quick search at bbb.org looks like they have a very low rating. It does look tempting though.

I might try the Lowe's nobody beats our price guarantee with this grill then I should have to pay this price plus tax. I would feel better buying from a well known chain.

Just a reminder that purchasing a WSM at Amazon.com using the links on the homepage is one of the most powerful ways you can help provide financial support to keep TVWB running. Buying from Aimtofind or anywhere else does not help TVWB. Yes, it's more money, but a good portion of that difference actually goes to TVWB.

Thanks for your consideration,
Chris

Chris good point. I know all about Affiliate Links with Amazon. Good way to support the forum. You should (or whomever helps maintain this site) create informative pages on all the Weber products. Thus giving you more places to have the links. I would really like to see history on all Weber products. The WSM seems to be documented well. A google search for weber smokey mountain the forum is 5th...thats great for driving traffic.

FYI The reviews on Amazon got me here. You have MANY great reviews and people pointing to this site. I will consider purchasing from Amazon in my decision...thanks for the reminder!

If I were to buy stuff other than Weber products going through this website, will you guys still get credit? If so, I'm all in. Plus I need Maverick ET73 or ET732 which I'm planning on buying on Amazon. Not sure if you'd get credit for that or just WSM?

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but to
j kalin.
I got my 18.5 at outdoor kitchen on center (just behind Nobbies). At the time, the store didn't have new one and they were too lazy to get one out the warehouse for me, so I got them to turn loose of the floor model for $225, plus I bought some other stuff.
The Ace here in Fremont won't bend on price.
