So about a year ago I found this deal for a buddy of mine - $10 on Craigslist for a '98 or '99 Platinum series Genesis NG with the rotisserie. I didn't have plumbed in gas at my house, or I would have been all over this deal. Fast forward a year. We moved from Tucson to Chandler, and my new house has a gas tap out back. My buddy has let the grill set on his back porch, and never once plugged it in because his tap is the wrong diameter, and he didn't bother to go get the $8 in parts it would take to reduce it from 1/2 to 3/8 on the quick connect. So I started bugging him to see if he wanted to get rid of the Genesis. He agreed, for the cost of a $15 Itunes gift card, and my old Weber kettle (which doesn't get any use now that I have the Big Steel Keg). Finally this past weekend I got down there to pick it up. I cleaned it out with a wire brush. The burners are in great condition, and the flavorizers have surface rust but are totally sound. They are the stainless ones too. Probably have a couple more years left in them. The firebox was dirty, but no where near as dirty as a grill of this age would be unless it was cared for or never used. Before I cleaned it up I plugged it in to see if it was working. Fired up on the first press of the ignitor!
To get the gunk off of the stainless grates (the thin U shaped ones) I tossed them in my BSK and fired it up with the vents wide open. I left them at 800 F for an hour or so and they were quite clean when they were done. Brushed off the ash and they were good to go.
Plans for the future include a repaint of the lid sides and the firebox, as well as the frame. Everything is in great Arizona shape - fading but not a speck of rust anywhere. I'd like to get it back to looking like new, or possibly even replacing the hood with a green, blue, or red one at some point, if I can find a donor for cheap.
