Looking to buy a WSM New 18.5 for $265 or a used 22 for $150

Get the used one. In a year you wont know the difference between new and used. You will remember the $200 + you saved. I just sold a six month old 18" when i found a 4 year old 22" on CL. Instead of the probe port do this: http://www.virtualweberbullet.com/cutting-a-probe-thermometer-slot.html

    Do you reuse your coals?

You can reuse but i find putting fresh on bottom and putting old on top lights better. I usually do it in a chimney and use my gas assist to light. Yesterday my chimney wasn't within arms reach (left in garage) so i just used baskets over gas assist with fresh coal over old and it was a...

    High heat BBQ Gloves

For coal, chimeny and grate handling a cheap pair of welding gloves from home depot are my go to's. For hot food, I also have a pair of orange silicone gloves from amazon that are good for handling large cuts likes butts, whole birds or full racks. They are dishwasher safe and using the...

question about adding gasket to WSM 18.5"

Kris yours looks good. Thats the same way i did my 18. Worked Great on door and top of mid section but like terry above It was a bit thick on the bottom of the mid section. It was fine while cooking and was very airtight but when ever i moved the smoker when it wasn't in use, the mid section...

    Is There a Dead Giveaway?

Dave is spot on here. Until they added the bolt on handles that was the easy eyeball test: In line with handle 22 (or 26:o) ) next to handle 18. since most of the kettles on craigslist are still pre 2015 this rule still applies but over time as the bolt on handles become more common it will...

Which would you keep Brand new modded 18 vs used 22

The Market has spoken, a buyer took the 18 yesterday. Looking forward to getting the 22 cooking. Going to keep it mostly unmodded as is for a while and see how it cooks. Its a few years old so the gasket may not be required. I think i will add some SS bolts to the charcoal and lower cooking...

Getting the most out of your time.

My schedule doesnt allow the opportunities to do long cooks on the WSM, so when i do, i make it count by cooking as much as i can in one shot. I grabbed a vacuum sealer on Amazon for about $65 and its probably the most underrated BBQ tool there is. Vacuum sealed BBQ in the freezer lasts for...

Best Probe Wire Solution? Cut Notch or Drill Port in 22" WSM?

I know the topic has been around for years, and I have done my own temp ports in my mini WSM and kettles before, but that was few years back and there are newer methods and products now. I’m upgrading from an 18” WSM to a 22”. My 18” was new and came with the Weber Silicon Grommet the 22 is...

Gas ignition Performer, do you use lighter fluid?

Lighter fluid coals makes make lighter fluid food. You have the gas assist use it. Fastest way I've found to light coals using gas assist also preheats grill. Throw 1/4 to 1/2 a chimney of coals in the chimney and light chimney using the gas assist. should be ready in 10 minutes or less...

How many slabs on a 26 at once?

If you dont like racks, you can roll them with a skewer and do 2-3 racks on an OTG. If you foil for part of the cook you can unrap and foil, they can overlap at that point.

    WSM clone?

The magic of the ECB and their clones :) i graduated from a stock ECB (el cheapo brinkmann) to a highly modded ECB to a WSM mini to kettles to legit WSM's. There are no dampers but the unit isn't sealed so there is airflow around the bowl. Your only temp control is managing your charcoal...

Which would you keep Brand new modded 18 vs used 22

Thanks for all the feed back guys. Funny all the first posts were pro 22, the latter were all pro 18. I listed on both on craigslist hoping that having some money on the table one way or the other would sway me but no takers yet. I think i will try harder to sell the 18 and keep the 22...

    Transporting 2 WSM's??

Not much experience with transporting WSM's but I transport kettles often and the best way is separate all components. Use towels to protect edges. I would place fire bowl and lid flat side down. Grates and water pan can fit inside (again wrap in towel to limit movement, rattling, and damage risk.

Blue K more stable than Stubbs?

i dont typically buy KBB because of the smoke smell and ash issues but i was given a bunch with a CL score so i used it while i had it. I didnt like it in my WSM at all. i felt like it burned out much faster then the trader joes i was using my WSM up to that point. when i inspected post cook it...

Which would you keep Brand new modded 18 vs used 22

The age old dilemma is always which WSM to get 18 or 22, but that's not my dilemma, I now have both. My question is which to keep. In March I was given a $250 lowes gift card. Lowes didn't carry the 22" so I used that 250 and bought an 18" WSM for very little out of pocket and I've been happy...
