    Gen 1000 regulator change

I just put the short one on - seems to work good but burner 3 has a bit of a flutter, some orange flame

    Gen 1000 regulator change

I haven't fired the grill up yet. The long one is what I removed. I was just wondering about the difference between the fittings on the end.

    Gen 1000 regulator change

I bought a replacement. They each have pipe thread end. Check out the close-up. Will that short one work as-is?

How Do YOU Clean Your WSM?

I use a Brinkman pan with balls of foil in the bottom under three layers of foil on top. After the cook, I remove and discard one or two of the top layers and replace them before every cook. I clean the grates pretty thoroughly and store them in a cabinet between cooks. Once a year I might...

Auber ATC and Excessive Charcoal use?

Is the Auber one of those ATCs that switches the blower on and off between 0% and 100% (or a set maximum) rather than regulating the blower speed continuously?

Auber ATC and Excessive Charcoal use?

You will find different opinions about water. I stopped using it after my second cook. You won't need it for temp control - that's what the ATC is supposed to do. 1. The ATC should make no difference on coal consumption. I've never seen a difference anyway. 2. With respect to ash, you might...

    Flame Boss 300 splitter

I suspect you could replace it with a generic splitter. It would be easy enough to try it out. You plug a probe in by itself, see what it reads. Then plug it in via using a stereo splitter, see what it reads. Or you could call or email Flame Boss and ask.

Turkey Talk Now Open for 2018!

This worked really well the last couple of years so I'll be doing it again. I'll be brining with the Whole Turkey - Apple Brine recipe posted here in Cooking Topics. The cavity will be stuffed with orange slices and twigs of rosemary, and the breast iced down before the cook. The aromas are...

    Flame Boss 400

Flame Boss is introducing a new controller called the 400-WiFi. It looks like a stripped down controller with no display that is part of the blower unit itself. Everything is setup by a mobile app for iOS or Android. I hope your device works! ;) I prefer a remote controller to be able to...

    Flame Boss 300 temp probes

A probe with a new design came apart on a 1st cook? Not good. I hope they revert to the previous design.

    Water pan cover

I've had an 18.5 since 2011. I stopped using the water pan after my 2nd cook and switched over to the foiled Brinkmann charcoal pan. IFAIK it still has the same balls of foil in the bottom that I started with. Brinkmann is gone but the pan is still available, though at much higher price than...

Leave as is or Auto Temp Controller

IMO and IME, adding temperature monitors and controls can be a bit of a slippery slope. Once you get started - well, I've put the Redi-chek away and am now up to a Flame Boss.

    WSM 18.5 - Salvageable?

I've been using a foiled Brinkmann charcoal pan for years. Unfortunately they are no longer $5 each (Brinkmann has gone away), more like $30. Time to find an alternative.

    Flame Boss

The Flame Boss can read three meat probes. I had a problem with a meat probe reading and after testing I found that of the three meat probe connections, MT1 was reading about 15 degrees high, regardless of which of my three meat probes I connected to the MT1 input jack. MT2 and MT3 were good...

Anyone have an automatic temperature controller for their 14.5 that works well?

Don't know if there is enough room on a 14, but you also might try directing the air from the blower down into the space below the grate so that the combustion air comes into the fire from underneath. I remember seeing a stamped aluminum thing from some ATC manufacturer that would attach over...

    Opinions please on lighting charcoal

I have an 18.5 WSM and have always lit off using #10 can in the middle. I use lump and an ATC. I fill the chimney maybe 5 inches with smallish coal pieces. I dump into the can when the chimney is roaring. The only time I have had a problem was when the chimney had too much coal. It ignited...

ATC Vent Mod (below the grate)

Good thread reference. One thing I was wondering about this approach (air from below). I'm using two crossed grates to prevent small pieces of lump from dropping below the grate. It also seems to hold more ash, which would seem to be a good thing unless it blocks the flow of air from...

ATC Vent Mod (below the grate)

I've been using a Flame Boss ATC for a couple of months. Like other ATCs, the standard blower mount uses an an adapter through a damper opening (daisy wheel). Because the daisy wheel opening is above the grate, I have always used some bent aluminum foil contraption to direct the incoming air...

    Auto temp control for WSM

Flame Boss also can be battery powered.

    Flame Boss

It has been working well for me. I like that there are no external mechanical switches or buttons to be subject to moisture intrusion. Rather, membrane switches are used. I like the personal device application interface and the notification of alarms via text. It holds temperature really...
