Is this a valuable or useful modification to make to a 2012 22.5" WSM? Does this design substantially improve air flows over the stock Weber charcoal ring for a 22.5" WSM? I can see where it may increase harcoal capacity a bit, but wasn't sure if the "high air flow" actually translated into...

OK, I'll bite: what if it is a bit windy? Its looking to be about 32 here, prolly some rain, and an 11mph breeze. Who needs the thermal underwear the most - me or the R2 unit?

Bought a pair of 100% wool Army blankets last year. One has been my go-to for my WSM: it was 21 degrees here Friday night last and the R2 unit (which admittedly looks more like a Jawa when wearing the blanket) held a rock solid temp all night long. I wrap it just like J Hoge's photo above, but...

I just put moving dolly wheels (tri-sets from Harbor Freight) on my 22". Easy to roll it anywhere I want - then again, I don't have to move it up/down any significant steps or changes in elevation.

I've done two overnight cooks with a WSM 22.5. Both were Minion cooks, using a full ring and about 3/4 of a chimney lit, ~6 qts hot water at the start, and both went 16+ hours with no charcoal added. Used a DigiQ2 running pit sets of 225 - 235 for the duration. Did have to add water to each...

I'll second the value of using a log. I've been using Chris' Excel sheet with a few mods for every cook I've done, and it has proven to be a very helpful resource.

Penzey's "BBQ 3000" isn't bad, either...but like you, I prefer their "Barbecue of the Americas". Good lookin ribs, those are!

Did a low and slow butt over the holiday. Used a 20lb bag KO: about 30 briquets in the chimney for starter, rest in the ring. Started with vents wide open till hit 220, the closed it up and let the DigiQ run the show at 225. Lasted 18 hours, and still had a little bit left.
