    Problem with longer Cat5 cables

Just one servo. I need to clarify that the voltage is not dropping on the HM side. Only at the RD3 side. I soldered the wires to the RJ45 punch down connectors as Ralph so wisely suggested. The cables I have are 24ga. With the fan running 100% and no resistor I get 4.93v at the HM and 3.6v at...

    Problem with longer Cat5 cables

Whenever I use a 40ft or longer cable to the RD3 the servo goes nuts. It works great with shorter cables. What I found is that the voltage is dropping due to the cable length. A 12ohm resistor in series with the blower solves the problem, so I added a switch to the RD3 to select the resistor...

    Great American Eclipse 2017

In the totality. Will be camping and firing up the WSM or Joe. They're serving moonpies and sunchips at work.

    WSM 22 Temps Question

You may have leaks around the door. If so use some foil to seal it. How seasoned is the WSM? You may also want to close down the top vent some, especially if you have a lot of coals burning. Are you using the water pan with water? That will also bring the temps down. Where are you measuring the...

    Question About Thermoworks Smoke

I just stuff it through the slit in the grommet. No issues. The Smoke is the best monitor on the market in my opinion. Excellent build quality for a consumer product.

Brisket this weekend - couple questions

Thermoworks Smoke is a great wireless monitor. They have a lot of other excellent products as well. Really good build quality. Much better than Maverick, and I own both. Their Thermopen is a must have. Brisket on the bottom rack if you have pork above it. The pork will baste the beef with fat...

WiFi woes with new SD card

I'm not a network guru. My initial build and card work perfectly. I can access the HM via WiFi and also remotely. The problem is that I can't get the WiFi to work when I change SD cards. I've edited the Config file, replaced the config file from the working card, downloaded a configured...

Best way to get probes into WSM

I don't know if it's the best way, but I used riv-nuts. Aka, pop-nuts. They're threaded, so I install a machine screw when not in use. I think I used a #10 size which is real close to the probe diameter. The drill I used was around 5/16, so the drilled hole is small when compared to grommets...

    Nomex

I put a gasket around the door opening and the top lip of the drum. No leaks at all. Top lip could use the 1/2in and door could use the 1in. You could probably cut the 1in in half if you bought a roll. I used the red high temp silicone for wood burning stoves.

Anyone using the aftermarket stacker units to expand capacity ?

I'm using stainless hooks on a chain to hang chicken halves. With the stacker I can hang about 14 chickens in the WSM. I'm hoping I can do as many rib racks. Hanging meat PBC style is another real advantage of the stacker.

Anyone using the aftermarket stacker units to expand capacity ?

I've got the CB stacker in use as I type this. I added cross bars to hang ribs and chicken. For stability I've got the drum section attached to the bowl with turnbuckles and eyebolts. I noticed about a 10deg. difference between the grommet and the top of the stacker.

    First overnight country smoke concerns

Seems like another good argument for latches between the parts. It may get knocked over, but it won't spill the fire. Your BBQ cook alarm will let you know something is up.

I let the smoke out of the display

Getting it back in is the fun part.

    LCD Suddenly Quit Working

I'm not a programmer, so nothing else in this thread makes any sense to me. The display is $11 from Mouser and elsewhere. My first action would be to replace it. Just a thought.

Not familiar with that. I'll check it out.

    Multiple dampers with one HM

Small world. I live just West on Knoxville and work in Oak Ridge. Did you move to Montana to be a dental floss tycoon? (Old Frank Zappa song.) One of my goals with this experiment is to eliminate the need for the blower and the constant attention from the HM. The HM could check in periodically...

I let the smoke out of the display

I just finished assembling the v4.3. During testing with the assembly out of the case the back of the display contacted the rPi3 usb ports. The display still works, but there is a burnt smd on the display board. There needs to be electrical tape or an insulator on the usb ports to prevent shorts...

HeaterMeter 4.3 build, everything working but fan

Have you tried disconnecting the servo ground to see if the fan starts to work again? I applaud you for getting this far on your first soldering job. Was your 12+ hour cook with the fan or the servo working? Just trying to make sure I have a clearer picture of the timeline.

    My HM build for UDS

Looks like you put a lot of effort into that setup. Nice job.

    Multiple dampers with one HM

I haven't tried anything yet. Purely theoretical since you are printing my first order of RD3s as I type. I was interested in three dampers to get the same burn pattern of the coals as manual operation of the vents. I'm also not against cutting larger vent openings. If this works, a single HM...
