Interesting. What is the temperature that you run your WSM at? I have an old one from the mid 90s I believe and I never had the issue of the top sticking to the mid section. I try to keep the temp around 250.

I guess I don’t quite understand the need to use these clamps. During a cook, I just take the cover off a few times to spritz the meat and I never worry about the mid section coming out.

I agree that one should take the extra time to use safety equipment and to do things carefully. My friend just told me about the guy doing a solar installation at the CSA Farm we know that he cut off four of his fingers off using the Skil Saw. Uggh, awful. I agree. When I saw the thread title, that’s what I thought this was about. I have the Honda CRV SUV so I want to take the cover off to fit the grill in my car. With the cover off, I put the grates, flavorizer bars, shelves, and burner tubes and manifolds in the cover to keep it in one place...

The other advantage of a gasser is using it as an oven during the summer. I roast veggies, make pizzas, bake bread, etc.
