WSM Placement?

In my backyard, I have a 62" wide brick walkway adjacent to the house that leads to my pantry/kitchen. I have my Genesis located there; the grill rear is 26" from house, a vinyl sided wall. It's an ideal spot because it is shaded, blocks a lot of wind, is very close to the kitchen and out of the way when my young kids play. During grill pre-heat and cleaning when the all 3 burners are on high, I can walk between the grill and the house and have not noticed any deformity or melted areas on the siding.

I want to put my WSM right next to the grill but I'm concerned about smoke output getting onto and staining the siding. Should I place it further away from the house? If I do, the wind will come into play and the collision risk with my kids and their toys increases.

Kids should be nowhere near a WSM when it is smoking because they get hot. Bob called it with the 5 feet rule.........

The wind can be your friend.

Control it with your vents and keep the unit 5' + from the siding.

Your siding stands more of a chance being affected by the grill (rear), mostly from a heat POV but also smoke than from the WSM when farther away.

The 5' Rule cuts out the brick walkway. The patio comes into play but it's open area and way far away from the kitchen. I guess I can cordon off the area with cones when it's in use. My yard slopes and is a bit uneven. The one level area is where I cut firewood for exercise...

I read here that wind affects the WSM more than cold or rain.

Well, sure high winds are going to affect everything you cook on (not just WSM) when it's charcoal/briq related. I'm talking about the usual gentle breezes we get virtually 100% of the time are quite helpful. You can always block off the wind (shield, vents) if too high (I'm not talking hurricane here bud) but unless you power up a fan  there's no hope if there's not a breeze to be had and the temps just won't get/stay up.

Always have to have some air flowing over the coals.

You can wash vinyl siding and the majority of smoke from a WSM goes out the top compared to a gasser which vents out the back as Len pointed out. How's you're overhang (if any ) as far as soffit/fascia? That would be the only area that would get affected on the WSM.
I use mine under a 2' overhang occasionally, maybe a foot from the vinyl, and the only smoke stains are on the soffit..

Gene it sounds to me like the pros outweigh the cons. You found a great location for it, sheltered from the wind, convenient and safe from the kids. The con being in time you may get some smoke stains you can wash away.

Store it there and when you are cooking move it out a little. You pretty much have to disassemble the whole thing just to fire it up...move the base out when you fill it and then use it there and put it back when done.
