Wood in a bag vs Wood Supplier?

Does anyone know where I can get fresher wood from a supplier in the Oklahoma area. I've been using just the stuff in the bag from Lowes, but I want to know if it really makes a difference. I have a feeling the stuff you buy in a bag at a retail store isnt probably top quality.
 
It's as quality as getting it from a tree and seasoning it yourself. The only real 'quality' issues with wood is if it is dirty, too old, too green (for some types), too dry.

But pecan trees are ubiquitous in our area - and it makes a superb smoking wood. (I have a tree I'd love to be rid of!) Grab the fallen branches, or cut some, and cut it up for use. It'll be ready in short order.
 
Aaron, the wood you would smoke with this summer needs to be cut & put up to dry now.
Think the wood in the bags is satisfactory & already dried.
 
Not really. Cut it to size immediately and you're good to go in a few weeks at most. The smaller the pieces, the quicker.
 
Well i did like Kevin said with my apple wood.

Took a saw and cut em to fist sized chunks then the axe to split em in half. Dryes in no time.

If you cant find a tree,you can call a kitchen/funiture maker and i bet you can get really cheap "throw away" pieces that will last you for a few years. And the good thing about this is that they have alot of different wood at hand.

Try finding a local orchard if there are any. I have seen several members on here stop by and get wood for free.

My stepfather had a pecan tree fall on him, so I ended up with a lot. Also had a lot of hickory for awhile, but now I just buy it in the bags. Nice things about the bags is that it's already cut in decent sizes. For me the bags are available year around.
 
Russ, In Okla. Pecans aplenty. In Florida there's a ton of citrus so I use that mostly. I get other stuff when I travel north. My brother has a tree company.

Okla doesn't have much in the way of orchards - not much in the way of anything, there's a dearth of quality and variety - but pecan trees are everywhere.
 
Check Craigslist for firewood.

I notice that in the Oklahoma City area there are somne "Free U-Cut Firewood" offers. Even a few Pecan offers.

I get my Hickory from a CL dealer - $20 for a 50lb bag of chunks. For Pecan, I drive over to my In-Laws and prune a few limbs.
 
Like Kevin said, pecan wood is great. There are pecan trees on my club golf course and the superintendent gives me the wood whenever he trims the trees. Easy and cheap.
