The Maverick ET-73 is an inexpensive popular model. I haven't seen a "best" yest, they all seem to have their strengths and weaknesses.
 
Do a search on Nu Temp and Maverick and you will get plenty of information. Either of these will work fine. As to the best.... it depends on what "best" is to you.

Low price
Better range
Mod-able for better range
Looks good
Temperature low/high warning


I have a Nu-temp. They are a smaller company and will give you better service.
 
I have 3 smokes under my belt, and I have both a Maverick ET-73 and NU Temp.

I've only used the NU Temp once, but had good luck with it.

I've used the Maverick ET-73 all 3 cooks and really like it.

If it were me, I'd go with the Maverick, but thats just one other opinion to help with your decision.
 
I have the Maverick and I like it a lot. I'm a newbie and being able to monitor both the grate temp and the meat temp while sucking down beers around the house is great. The only problem I have is I kinda half broke the on/off switch on the receiver and I have to use a small flathead screwdriver to turn it on and off now. But, that was probably my fault in the first place.
