Wine Barrels

Hi all, I just picked up 3 wine barrels at $45 for each. I want to use them in my 18 WSM & was wondering how much I should use as the wood is pretty dry I,m sure. I will cut the slats in 3" pieces on my chop saw. Thanks for any ideas.

Great find for sure. I have used the jack Daniel´s barrel chips a few times. Cant really say i get the taste of the whiskey in the finished product.

But it sure smells good!

Guess its oak witch is medium/mild on the smoke list.
So treat it as normal oak. And i guess you have to try it to perfect it.

I do all my smoking on a pellet smoker, and its odd you say this. BBQ delite just released a wine barrel pellet, and I was thinking of picking some up.

Its just oak wood infused with wine, let me know if you get any different flavor profile from the wine, vs just oak?

I read this with interest. Years ago, a local distillery gave away old oak barrels for hauling away. I took my two kids with me, with axes and mauls and we broke up MANY barrels and hauled a couple of truck loads away. Made the finest fireplace wood you can imagine.

Now, when I could use them for smoking, etc, none are available.

Oh well, such is life!

This thread got me thinking so I just put some cheese on using wine barrel dust. The smoke does smell a little like wine. Will let you know in 4 weeks how it comes out.
