not a gimmick, it's a factory grommet for thermo probe wires. keeps folks from hacking up weber perfection.

Just curious which model you purchased that has the grommet, where and when did you make your purchase. I'll be shopping for a 18.5" model in the next few weeks but will be holding out for that 2014 model which includes the grommet.

The wife ordered the 18.5 model off Amazon last week.
I was a bit confused about this grommet, I didn't see anything written about it. now I know why. I guess it's a new thing Weber added to the model.
I don't think the small hole is big enough to push the Maverick probe threw.
The longer flat hole will fit the two of them, and seems soft enough (for now) to seal tight around the wires.
I'm going to be doing a Pork Butt on Monday, so I'll let everyone know how it works out.
 
doh knew i shoulda waited a few more weeks to order mine. thought it wouldnt make it onto amazon til the end of the year...
 
Perhaps the small hole is utilized for ambient temp reading so it holds the probe in place? Just a thought, probably incorrect.

I also ordered a 22.5 last week but from Walmart. No idea where it is coming from but I hope it has the new grommet. I also ordered a Maverick with the 2 probes.

Got one today from Amazon and its the old style...Its going back for exchange as it had some damage and next one will be here Sat so we will see if it as it. Its not a deal wrecker if it doesn't as I can grommet mod it myself . :)
 
I emailed WEBER asking if they knew a way to find out if retailers like Amazon are shipping old or new now and if we had options if we buy now and get an old one. From the reply I would hold off a few weeks to buy if your looking for new style. It will give retailers time to push old stock out in preparation for the new models...I had inquired about if we ordered today and got a old style what we could do....I took persons name off to keep it private as I don't have permission to post it...

Thank you for your email. It would be best to return the old grill and get the new Smokey mountain cooker with the grommet. However if you want to get the center ring it can be purchased with the grommet the price is $ 188.10.

I would wait a bit to try and get the new style. If my replacement one for the scuffed one is a older style I`m just going to grommet mod it as it still works fine the old way..lol :) Its cheaper at a few dollars than buying a new center..
