We got our chest freezer about a year ago. It lives in a corner of the dining room and is the same depth as the buffet so it blends in fairly well. I suppose we could cover the front in contact paper or something to improve the appearance, but this hasn't been an issue. We keep a big cutting board on top of it.

We should have gotten ours sooner, and I think more people should find room for one. One subtle advantage is that it's easier to buy a refrigerator when you don't care so much about the freezer side of it. Also, very energy efficient. Great for power outages, parties, turkeys, hams, ice cream cakes, frozen pizzas, making ice, etc. When you have everything you need in the chest freezer, you can keep your kitchen freezer neat and tidy and organized because it doesn't have to be packed to the brim with everything. Not sure if this is a plus, but little kids can help themselves to ice cream without finding a chair to reach the freezer.

I'll need to start tracking what's in it.

And map out meal plans so I don't end up with a half dozen Turkeys just because they were on sale.

Others eating my ice cream. Hmm

Yeah, if I had feeezer space, m those 77cents/lb pork shoulders would be half the weight of this house. Throw in the once a year prime rib sale. Briskets...
I think someone on here keeps a list of what is in their freezer. And when it got there. So meals are planned, and money is saved. Instead of almost saved, and Costco makes sense. So when you say don't have a cow man a...

I finally bought a used 7CF one this year. Very nice to have. I did put a watt meter on it to see what it cost to run. We pay .045 /kwh here I think so it cost .25 /day, $7.50 / month, or about $91/year.

I'm on a time of use rate plan, so Im considering using a timer so this will not run from 4pm to 8pm.

I think my rate is nearly double during peak. I need to look again

A timer is a bad idea especially if it's in a none climate controlled area in the summer. Most use less than 1 amp and if kept 3/4 full wont run very much. the time off will just make it run longer when its on so no savings by limiting it. same way with large swings in your home with heat and cooling systems, been in the HAVC business 45 years so have learned a thing or 2

I’ve never been able to embrace a chest freezer. Had one for years and always seemed to find myself bent over and digging around in it whenever I was looking for something. We gave up and bit the bullet for an upright freezer instead. Yes, it costs more and is supposedly less efficient to operate, but the upright has been so much easier to keep organized and find things quickly. Having said that, a dedicated freezer of any type is a wonderful thing for us grilling folks especially if you’re into vacuum sealing as well. To be able to grab one at a bargain price like this just makes the deal even sweeter.

@MikeCantell I've read in times past that [upright] self-defrost freezers result in temp swings. I recently bought a new one and I have a WiFi temp monitor inside the unit. When I look at the data I never see variations greater than 2*f. Has the defrost technology changed, or am I just not seeing the swings due to possibly a long refresh rate on my temp monitor? I understand what happens during defrost cycles in a heat pump, but not in a household food freezer. Thx

I use the remote thermometers as well to monitor fridge and freezer temps. A freezer that varies a few degrees, I don't think is a big deal as long as it stays down around zero.

We have an upright freezer and ref/freezer in the garage. both are self-defrost and I have monitors in both of the freezers. The ref/freezer has about 20-degree swings when in the defrost mode. The upright freezer only swings about 5 degrees.
We've had both types of freezers and I much prefer the upright to the chest freezer even if it cost a little more to run the upside is I don't have to keep the uprights door open as long as a chest freezer when looking for something.
