what was I thinking...?

I've started in a chimney over unlit many times with about 20 in the chimney. If some of the coals in the ring start up,and they usually do, it's no big thing. 20 catch quickly and I dump earlier. I'll admit, I've never gone with a full chimney over unlit, but in any event, as I'm sure you did, dump the chimney earlier. Same as a MM.

Hey JIm,doesn't look like a big deal. The coals got lit and you started cooking. I've known lots of people who had trouble just doing that!

So you got a head start.

Yep .. Heat radiates outward, and in a cylinder like a chimney, it is gonna radiate downward as you found out. While you said it didn't burn upward, your pic indicates it did (through the slits in the chimney). Yes, heat rises .. in general.

I found out the hard way several years ago, on a brand new concrete driveway at that, not to place a chimney on concrete. The concentrated heat exploded a divot in the driveway .. And all I did was set it down for a moment after it was lit to remove the center section so I could dump the coals in.

yeah, I dumped the chimney full of lit coals on the unlit, and it took off ok... but I guess I was expecting something that did not happen.
Usually, I fire up the chimney in the OTG or silver...
if you think about this web site forum, ... it's almost like AA or something close to it (I've never attended nor do I feel I need to but...)
Lots of support, Thanks guys.
