I use the 14" saucer works great. I have one saucer crack after a couple years of usem but never heard of one deforming, it must have been platic based not clay.
The reason I have found for using the saucer instead of just an emtpy pan is the that it makes a great heat sink. Meaning that once it gets heated up in the cooker it help stabilize the temps and reduces temp swings.
